    Tarp Pole Mods

So I really liked some of the ideas I saw on various forums and videos, of using some tent poles (put together at the appropriate length) to make some over the ridge line tie outs for my tarp's side pull outs.

As many of you know, this adds a tremendous amount of space under the tarp.
So, I obtained the equipment and made the poles. I used them this summer on my trip to the BWCA. They worked great.

But, I want them to work even better and easier!

Does anyone know of an "end" for a tent pole that would actually have an eye hole in it?
If I had ends like that, it would be easier to attach the guy lines.

If these don't exist yet, I encourage someone to start making some.

Or another option would be some sort of clip that would attach to the standard pole ends.

    Anyway. Just wanted to share.

I have a couple of repurposed tent poles I put the aluminum ends in. The ends are the type with a 1/4" or so pin sticking out. My next project is to take some aluminum flat stock and make some figure eight things to slide on the ends and clip the shock cord to. I will post some pictures when I finish them.

The idea of increasing usable area under a tarp with tent poles is good, but I think putting the poles on the outside and pulling the tarp just seems like a recipe for a leak.

I followed the plan Kitsapcowboy posted for his Batwing tarp ( https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ll-Season-Tarp ) and put the poles inside. It works great, a couple of pieces of grosgain at the tie outs and it is done ..... if there is a way to make pole mods better, this gets a vote from me.

And an inside pic of mine:

To the OP.. not sure I understand what you're looking for. You mention attaching guy lines.. do you mean the lines from the side panel pulls?

If your tarp pole has an end fitting like these...

...you can tie or splice an eye in the end of the cord that is just large enough to fit over the bulb at the end of the fitting. It won't go anywhere once it's slipped over the end of the pole.

If you don't have that kind of fitting on your pole, you can make a 'stop' about 1/4" in from the end of the pole to keep the eye from sliding along pole. Just tie a turks head or whipping knot with a small gauge cordage and put a dab of crazy glue on the cord to keep it from sliding. I have a picture of this somewhere if it would help.

You can also use your trekking pole for an over the ridge pole.

I use under the tarp pole as mentioned above. I started using it years ago when I was using fixed length trekking poles that were too short for the size of my tarps.
A single under the tarp pole opens the tarp up significantly more than the over the tarp pole, but you do have to carry the pole (mine is just under 7 oz) and have the necessary fitting or pocket on the tarp to accept the pole.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I would like to have an eye at the exposed end. (I guess that would result in an eye at both ends of the tip.

What about an arrow nock? I'm not sure that arrow shafts are the same size as tent poles but it's worth a look and sounds like a very inexpensive way to go/

The fittings I linked to are aluminum. If you have access to some hand tools you can put an eye in the end.

Or, you can use two part epoxy, JB Weld or CA glue to glue a small picture frame eye into the end of the pole.

Post a closeup of what's on your pole end now. Is it the standard pole-end fitting?
