Video tutorial: How to plan a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike

You can only use a hammock at Indian Gardens (hang from the ramada posts) and the North Rim CG, but it's still an iconic hike. I see lots of questions in various forums about planning an R2R hike, and I've done enough hiking there that the Grand Canyon feels like an old friend to me, so I put together a short tutorial video to help with this intimidating process. I encourage you to do an R2R hike at some point in your life, and I hope you find this video useful:

Very nice job with a lot of good information. I have hiked river to rim once and rim to river once, packing heavy for rafting trips. I found the hike down to be harder on the body. Woke up the 1st morning after the hike and walked like zombies. They called it the "Kaibab Shuffle".

Thanks for posting the video. I am following.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

I'll watch the video in the morning, thanks for putting together. I hiked R2R2R 13 year ago and remember it vividly. Can't wait to get back. It looks a lot bigger when standing at the bottom looking up.

Great video Kurt. Hiking and hammocking in the Canyon a few years ago still reigns as one of the best backpacking trips I have ever done.

Thanks Scotty.Yes, the hike down takes out the quads. The hike up keeps you panting, but seems easier on the joints.

LOL, yes indeed it does look bigger from the bottom. I find the best views are from the Tonto platform 1/2 way down.
