The Lorax is Not Speaking For The Trees... So We Should

Just finished our annual winter hang with our group of hammock hangers at a local park that tends to be empty at this time of year; however, we all very were saddened to see the damage left over from this season’s summer campers. This type of havoc isn’t cause by hammock hangers; yet, we will be the first ones to feel the wrath when the park changes the rules about the trees due to this wreckless behavior. Please educate your friends, family, scouts, campers, etc. on how to treat and respect trees.

It's a shame we have such an inconsiderate, disrespectful and uneducated population. Sadly, it's doesn't apply to trees only.

That was all in one local park? I hate when I see **** like this, that and the litter in State Parks, last time I camped, I picked up 4 candy bar wrapper, 3 pairs of kid socks, gloves, meat tray, gum wrappers everywhere and that just the one site we slept at

I think there are two effective remedies (I'm sure there are others). Educate friends and family who you recreate with. No need for nails in trees, wacking away at trees in the campgrounds, and campfires are really necessary for the vast majority of ventures. The other approach is supporting educational groups like Leave No Trace, R.E.I, and such like. Over time camping ethics will come around. There are times I would simply like to shoot the swine dumping trash, trashing out fire rings, pounding nails, chopping into trees too, but that is probably not legal....yet

If I were made the king of the campground for a day, the one thing I would ban would be hatchets. Unless you're on your own land, there is no reason that I consider sensible for having a d%*m hatchet in a public campground - none.

Sorry, but I have to completely disagree with this statement. Public land is to be shared by all and there is absolutely no reason I can't use a hatchet to process dead wood for a campfire. Just because people use a tool irresponsibly doesn't mean you ban the tool, you ban the irresponsible people.

Agreed. I did just that last weekend. We don't touch live stuff, but there was plenty of thicker dry wood on the ground that was too big to burn as we found it.

As for the rest... if only it were as easy to ban carelessness.
