    Chop,

As mentioned sticks work very well. Or like Shug says, wood dowels have also worked for me.

    Merry Christmas.

I no longer use toggles.. or MSH.. But when I did I used solid aluminum shepard stakes cut down. No way you're going to crush those. Because of their size (short and narrow) they don't weigh much different than the Ti Dutch toggles I have.

To the OP... If you want a pair to try, shoot me a PM.. I'll send them to you. I'm never going to use four pairs of toggles..
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Thanks for the offer MikekiM - roughly, what would say the diameter of the shephard stakes is? I have used a few different ones over the years.

I'm guessing as I don't have them in hand... 1/4"

Look here... it's a picture in my HF albums. I would post it, but it's huge. Better to link to it.

If it matters, I can measure them. They are solid aluminum, about 2.75" - 3". One set is longer than the other. Both have a chamfered hole drilled in one end for a tether. I also have a set of solid fiberglass toggles and the same Ti ones you have. I've tried carbon fiber too. I don't use any them any longer either.

That's some long trail dossier you have.. I am humbled by your accomplishments.

Lawson makes these as bear bag toggles, https://lawsonequipment.com/Hardgood...gle-p1130.html but they're made from supergrade aluminium and I use them for my hammock, too with Dutch's !" Spider/ Poly straps. Once hung the whoopies on the toggles just to test and they didn't even flex.

I've seen the Lawson aluminum toggles.. they are what inspired me to cut down the solid aluminum Shepard hook. Same thing but you get two toggles per stake for $1.99 at Wally World.

Thanks to all for your thoughts on this! I love how HF works and the sharing that a simple question like this can bring out

Toggles weigh nothing... for the man willing to carry an axe!

So far, I have used Dutch's Spider Web, which I believe is even lighter even than the UHMWPE, with his titanium toggles without any sign of crimping. I'll keep an eye out for it now, though. I've been thinking of going toggleless; maybe now is the time.

Nice El Gordo...that made me laugh

I went toggle-less for quite some time actually (about 30 nights on our Mississippi River Thru-Canoe in 2017), using a J Bend, and really liked it. That was with other webbing though (heavier). This summer, while hanging with a friend, we had a J Bend fail. In his case, the knot slipped over, and down he went. He was using the Spider Web and the continuous loops on the hammock were Amsteel. Personally I have used the UHMWPE for a few hangs (maybe 20) around home and on day hikes, and have not had the same problem....never really consider the likelihood of a J bend fail too much untill I heard the thud.

There is probably a way to back up the J Bend in case of failure.
