Good job testing at home. I'm going the same thing this morning... testing a new hammock setup to make sure it works with the UQ, trying out a gear hammock, getting the suspension right... so I don't end up on the river next weekend with something that doesn't work (besides my right knee).

You won't be disappointed with your Dutch gear... and both of the orders I placed in the last few weeks have arrived within 4-5 days.

    Good luck.

You said the store bought straps were cut to length. Was this bulk flat strap webbing? What was the width? How were they attached to the tree/support and to your hammock?

in the OP you stated NYLON & IMHO there lies the problem

nylon is by nature a stretchy material w/ some amazing strength properties

when sails first began being made out of synthetics nylon was one of the first to be used and the stuff lost it's shape rather quickly

anchor rodes n dock lines(in the boating world) and para-cord(for persons who idealy jump out of perfectly good airplanes) climbing ropes and safety harnesses all rely on the stretching quality of nylon to protect their charges from shock n jerk motions and that is good

dacron/polyester on the other hand stretches very little doing it's job while not loosing it's shape/length

where nylon sails lost their shape and nylon halyards stretched allowing the sails to droop loosing more of their shape dacron/polyester sails and halyards helped resolve the issue

there are other products that are virtually stretch free like the popular DYNEMA/AMSTEEL BLUE stuff that folks are using to make whoopsie slings etc

yes i know i'm rambling... sorry

    long story short...

if your load needs elasticity use nylon

if you would like your load to be in the same place as you left it on the morrow... use dacron/polyester dynema/Amsteel Blue or similar products

your camping store folks didn't sell you a weak product they sold you a stretchy product that likely had a similar working/breaking strength

A DIY solution is to pick up a length of polypropylene strap from a boating store and sew loops in the ends. I made a couple of sets about a year ago and they have not let me down yet.

Polyester is less stretchy than polyprop, stronger too. But polyprop is the cheapest, as long as you can live with the stretch and thicker webbing (not nearly as stretchy as nylon tho).

I have learned my lesson about nylon webbing. No it wasn't the stores fault. My straps never broke but are not usable for hanging my hammock. When my order from Dutch gets in I will try those straps. If they don't work back to the drawing board.

I have the 1.5 spider straps from Dutch. They are crazy light and feel more like ribbons than straps. I like them so far, except they love to bunch up which kind of defeats the purpose.

I stick with these as they work well and are so easy to adjust and they are inexpensive.

"Camping" stores are often selling strapping to hold down kayaks, for cavers & climbers (who WANT it to be stretchy), and other and similar uses. Nylon is ideal for them, but not for us.
