Video: Backpacking the Linville Gorge East Rim

Got back out to the Linville Gorge in NC last week to do some backpacking and hammock camping with friends. Three days two nights. All four of us were using hammocks and we had a good variety of gear and brands. I took a look at everyone’s setup around the 7:15 mark.

This was my first time using an underquilt protector and wow what a difference. It was cold and very windy night two and I stayed warm with no drafts using my WB minifly tarp and 20 degree wookie UQ and 20 degree UGQ Bandit TQ.

That day two looked rough. How many miles did you hike each day? I know anytime you are hiking in a gorge scenario the miles can be very very tough. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.

Im actually not sure what our total mileage was, my In Reach Explorer died on me unexpectedly and that’s what I use to track mileage. Day one was about 5 miles, I think day two was probably around 7 and day three probably 3. It felt double that after the hike up to the chimneys and then up to Hawksbill. We both hike pretty regularly and are used to elevation gain with packs on, but day two really smoked us.

Awesome video! I'm really hoping to get up into the Gorge one of these days, let me know if y'all plan on going again and wouldn't mind additional company. I really wanna get some miles logged in the Gorge, but with the trail conditions being the way they are, I wanna do it with someone who knows where they're going. Either way, awesome video and I'm glad it was a great experience!

Thanks for the info. Miles in these gorge scenarios are as tough as they come and can bring a man to his knees even if you are in good shape. Thanks for sharing this trip with us.

Did you come down Little Table Rock Trail after Table Rock? Only ever gone up it but it is a Steepy-Doozy.
Wow....quite the blow through Pine Needle camp. Rough skipping coffee.
So nice to eyeball the Gorge.

No we didn’t do Little Table Rock, we debated it though. I remember watching you and Hickery climb up it in one of your videos. I’ve heard it is tough!

Yeah the wind picked up out of nowhere the second night. I was really pleased with the amount of protection the minifly provided even in those conditions, it’s quickly becoming my favorite tarp.
