How do rectangular tarps do when the rl is run diagonally? Do they hang okay, even though the seam runs across the rl, and the tensions of the two pegs are not directly opposed?

Good question ... thought about trying that with my 8x10 once and must have gotten distracted. Have to give it a try this weekend and see what it does! The 11x12 MIGHT be a bit long on the diagonal to do effectively though.

Yeah ... sounds right to me. Guess another factor would be the center seam too ... Well ... just going to have to give it a try. Calling for better weather the next few days ... I'll check it out and entertain the dogs in the process!

When I started using a tarp I did that quite a bit.
Trying to cover 2 hammocks with one tarp.
It worked quite well, just took a bit more to tension the tarp in the odd directions.
I found a square tarp seemed to be easier, but rectangles worked well also
I've played with that type of setup before and its ok. Had a hard time getting a snug stake out tho. Left a slight opening on both the left and right sides too. You can do it but the lay of the tarp was a little loose, it would work fine in warm weather, with no wind. Maybe I'll do some pics? Square tarp would work best, IMO.
Mine was rectangular 8 X 11. ymmv. My seams is on the 8' foot length, not down the normal 11' ridgeline.
Stretching it taut across the seams, and pulling at the weird angles, made for a good set of wrinkles in the sil. But at a diagonal, it was close to 14 feet long on the ridgeline, which is HUGE. But like I said, it would leave the head end exposed on one side and the foot end open on the other.
Ambulo tua ambulo.
I've been wondering about this as well. It seems like it would provide better coverage than a diamond tarp since you lay diagonally on the hammock already and the rectangle tarp would provide some asymmetrical coverage.
Would tightness help with pullouts?

Tarp tensioners may help to get it taught enough without pulling your stakes out.........

Alrighty then, heres my tarp under normal set up, rectangular style.
And here it is on the corner or diamond set up.
You can see afew wrinkles and it was worse, so added an extra stake along the sides. Its still floppy. I tried to pull the floppiness out. Weren't happenin'.
Another issue I see is that with this "long ridgeline" it would be harder to get the hammock and tarp close to each other to block the wind. I would have to raise the tarp heigth so high, the wind can get in under the tarp.
Pictures are out of order but you get the idea....
Can it be done? yes, but with what I have for a center seam on my tarp, it won't get tight. Don't know if it's my seam, or just the nature of the beast?
you can blame it on my sewing
This is my original "gargoylebird tarp", and I've since modded it with extra tie out points. It sets up nice as a baker-hut, and added velcro to close up the side doors, ala winter hut.
Ambulo tua ambulo.
Dave - That's how I hang my 8x10 when solo and mine does okay. I sometimes use additional tie outs beyond just the two if it is really windy or stormy but for the most part just the 2 work fine.
When I set up the honeymoon suite with my larger tarp, I still go on the diagonal but usually need a few additional tie outs.
