This spring I went hammock camping with my son. We were planning to use the dutch double hooks with a spreader bar, but I made the mistake of forgetting the bar at home. In the end we found a pair of trees that were the right distance to hang and one was wide enough we didn't need to borrow or improvise a spreader bar. We just wrapped the straps so that there was one coming off of each side of the wide tree. We had a 12 foot hex tarp (it was supposed to be a 12 foot winter tarp, but there was mixup with my order) that covered us just fine. The winter tarp would have helped to protect our gear a bit better from the rain, but it still worked fine. I personally prefer the side by side setup as it means no one has to climb to get into their tarp and there's no worries of the top hammocker falling on the hammocker below them (either from gear failure or klutziness).

LadyFaile beat me to it, but I'll say it again for emphasis. Normally, you hang your hammock so the suspension is coming off from the middle of the tree. But you could also adjust it so the suspension strap is coming off the side of the tree. That way, two hammocks can each use the same pair of trees. One hammock coming off the left side and one hammock coming off the right side. The distance apart would be the diameter of the tree. It's up to you to decide if you also want to arrange the sleeping so each person's head is at opposite ends.

This is what we've done a couple times. No under quilt or quilt protector needed. We're on the porch, so no Superfly needed either!

This was in the winter, so the RR's bugnet is rolled up. I adjusted things that the picture doesn't show, as I wasn't planning on sharing this picture. Things like the hang of the RR and bringing the top hammock down a bit. Also cinching up the ends of the Blizzard Tube a little more and adding a rubber band to reduce the cubic inches inside the Blizzard Tube, , sealing rain out of the end of the tube, and on and on....

Basically, just take it as food for thought and realize that the picture leaves much room for improvement, which we have done.

What i love about this setup, is when we're backpacking, the entire sleep system per kid is less than 3 lbs. I used to have it down to the oz, but it's been a year or so.

I have the dutch spreader bar too. However I havent used it for a long time. In our area, it is not a problem to find a fat tree or two small trees not far from each other, to hang hammocks side by side and enjoy comfort of not touching each others hammock. We use 3x4 meters tarp, which is the same I use for one hammock. Tried this setup in several rainfalls and storm with no issues.
All hammocks I have are single no net hammocks. You dont really need expensive hammock like chameleon, dont worry.
