Insulated Pad with Wookie Zero Degree Underquilt

Pardon me if this has already been discussed.

I have a Klymit Insulated Static V Pad with a R rating of 4.4. I just ordered a Wookie Zero degree Under quilt from Warbonnet Outdoors. If I use these together on my Blackbird XLC hammock, will the Klymit pad increase my overall warmth or could it actually decrease the warmth I would get from the under quilt?

Planning on a New Years hike and it will be Cold more than likely.

    Thanks,

    G money

It will help as long as you do not experience condensation and get damp and then it could hinder. Stacking quilts works as well and you do not typically run into the condensation issue as they breath better than non porous insulation.

I believe what Trailslug is referring to is perspiration vs condensation. A lot of pads have non-porous surfaces that doesn't allow body moisture to escape into the atmosphere, and hence, accumulate on the non-porous surface. I use pads a lot and seldom have a problem. But it is really a multitude of factors including a person's individual physiology, temperature, humidity, and the material the pads are made of. If it is a problem and there is another material between you and the pad, e.g. a synthetic sleeping bag, quilt, or blanket it should absorb a majority of the perspiration.

i think pad + quilt would be less effective than quilt + quilt. it would obviously be warmer than just either alone though

Unless you suddenly get unusually frigid New Year's weather in Texas this January, the 0* Wooki UQ will be more than enough to keep you toasty warm. Even accounting for a 20* comfort buffer, you'll be fine. For example, the average January low temp in the Guadalupe Mountains is 31*. The record low has never gone below 0*. Keep an eye on the weather reports and leave the pad in your vehicle for less complexity and condensation.
The game is the best teacher.

Don't forget about a good under quilt protector, and good tarp coverage. I've found the UQP on my wooki and a tight- pitched thunder fly make a noticeable difference keeping the wind chill factor at bay and trapping in the toasty air

That 0 degree Wooki should handle the temps you may encounter just find. I’ve had my 20 degree into the teens, no problems.

As previously mentioned an Argon underquilt protector would be beneficial.

I tried a quilt + pad setup on a recent trip in Sweden - lesson learned, underquilt + pad is colder than an underquilt alone. I think this was because the pad pushed the quilt away from my body, creating an air gap. My experience was with a standard Thermarest and a WB Yeti, so your Klymit pad and Wooki may get along more agreeably.

Good question, was thinking the rigid corners pushed the uq away from the hammock, breaking the seal... waiting for his answer too...
