    Footprint under hammock/tarp?

    New to this so asking...

I'm used to tenting and have always used a tent footprint under my tent. From reading and looking at photographs of people hanging, I have not really noticed if people use a footprint under their hammock so that you can lay your backpack, footwear etc and it not get dirty/wet. Do people use this?? I have footprints from my tents and was wondering if worth while to pack one in my backpack?

Lots of people put something down below their hammocks to put their boots, pack, etc. on. You may have better luck searching for "ground cloth" rather than footprint for hammock-specific results.

I use a leftover piece of Tyvek for a "floor mat" under my hammock so I have a place to put my shoes etc. (I also use tyvek as a footprint under my 1 man tent)

Welp, my shoes are usually dirty from hiking anyhow and I hang my pack from the head end of my hammock.

Just never found a need to, never added the weight.

Lots of folks use a small piece of Tyvek for their gear. Hanger slag for it is a welcome mat. You just need a few square feet to give you a small spot to put things. We stock 3 foot wide rolls and cut off by the length by the foot for just this application.

I never even thought about hanging my pack from the hammock; that's ok to do?

I tend to use a scrap piece of poly or Tyvek, usually around 2' x 3'. It's also nice to have just for laying things out when emptying my backpack.

One of the wonderful things about hammock camping is the simple fact that there is never anything off limits. If it makes sense to you, then try it. If it works, tell us about it.

I tried hanging stuff off my hammock at the ends but found my stuff would get wet in the rain. My solution is a gear hammock. The gear hammock is just a small hammock I set up under my hammock to hold my stuff off the ground. It keeps everything clean and dry as well as accessible from inside the hammock, I just reach down under my bugnet and I can find a drink or hat. The gear hammock doubles as a hammock chair.

I also use half a yoga mat for a "ground cloth" under my setup. I am diabetic and was told early on to never walk barefoot. As a result, my feet are more sensitive than many. I like the little bit of padding the cheap mat provides when I take off my shoes before getting into and out of the hammock.

I use the other half of the yoga mat to stand on when I am putting on or taking off my drysuit for kayaking in cold weather. It protects the latex boots. I put on neoprene boots over the latex boots before I step off the mat.

I have Tyvek but honestly I've never used it. That didn't stop me from buying some more today from Arrowhead however. It's light enough to carry around, packs small and I figured having enough to go under me should I need to go to ground or to use as a makeshift wind break wouldn't be a bad idea.

As almost everyone has stated, Tyvek. Another popular option (seems more popular among ground-dwellers) is a Polycryo ground sheet, available from Gossamer Gear. It's basically the same material as shrinkable window insulation film. Tyvek is more durable, Polycro is lighter.
