How wide are your tree straps?

After reading about some areas requiring at least two inch tree straps, I ordered two inch polypropylene straps and put soft shackles on them to attach to whoopie slings for my suspension.

Before that, I used one inch dynnema straps with beetle buckles from Dutch. I keep both in my suspension bag in case I have a tight set of trees but usually use the bigger straps to keep from hurting the trees.

What do you use and why?

Most my straps/webbing are 1 inch because that's the width of the commercial product. I'm guessing there is an issue of "diminishing returns". Wider straps means more weight and bulk for not that much more protection. However, I plan on carrying 2 inch "seat belt" straps when I visit a commercial sites - like an official campground. The tree around here are pretty sturdy (Ponderosa Pine) but for visuals, I think it makes park people happier to see the wider straps. So using wider straps "in public" is sort of ambassadorship. Out in the real woods, I go with 1 inch.

Been using 1 inch straps since I started hammock camping. Two inch straps do look better in car camp grounds but in the back country I've never felt I needed any wider than 1 inch.

Where'd you get the 2" sleeves?

Two inch sleeves are cosmetic, forces on tree are from what’s running through sleeves.
I use Dutch’s 2.0 dyneema straps, blue with three black racing stripes—-it’s one inch wide, but soon wrinkles and becomes ropelike.
I’ve started wrapping twice around tree (round turn) not to save the tree—-to save me! Both sides slipped downwards on trees last week. Did not touch ground—though close. Last week was only one wrap around tree, with some of Dutch’s dyneema spider daisy chain straps. Trying out a new suspension!
I’ve been thinking of getting Dutch’s lightest strap. It’s advertised at 1.5 grams per foot? It might be a fraction more. It’s said to remain flat, much flatter than other lightweight straps.
A round turn adds more tree gripping friction and squeezed contact all way round tree.
Trees are tough—most of them. In high use campgrounds, trees go through lots of wear and tear. Way out in woods I don’t worry about trees.
Two wraps on tree takes longer setup. Sliding down tree can increase wear and tear on both tree and strap.

If one were to make several wraps around the tree with a one inch strap, how much would that help spread the load (and damage) to the tree?

If a stick were placed vertically under the strap on the back side of the tree, would that help spread the load, make it worse,or have no effect?

I normally use 1" straps but I have a set of 2" straps also. In a couple of the parks I set up in they required 2" straps.

I only do one inch straps. I'm leary of jurisdictions requiring two inch, no telling what other thinking they will insist on doing for you.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.
