    UP Insulation

Just saw the new UP insulation, and I'm interested.

How is this stuff in terms of stuffing? (see what I did there? :-)

For instance, if you try to grab a handfull of down and stuff it into a quilt channel, you'll have snow shower of down plumules all over the place. The UP in the picture looks like it will hold together much better, so that it might be able to be stuffed by hand. Is this the case?

The UP handles very nice. You can grab a handful and put it in the channel without getting completely covered in it.

UP... Does that mean it comes from the top part of Michigan? Do I get my choice of pasties?

Up is opposite of down, he says.

Another similar-sounding loose-fill multi-denier siliconized polyester insulation branded LoftTek featuring in a jacket is at almost 20x funding goal on KS. Compare and contrast? And when is the jacket coming ;-) ?

I'm in on that kickstarter. To my super untrained eye, it looks like the same stuff. I'm excited to try the stuff in anycase.

    UP Insulation

I'm given to understand that low denier, tiny fibers have a relatively poor lifespan due to "kinking". They apparently break down, and lose their effectiveness at maintaining loft. I'm curious if this is expected with UP and Loftek (it's my one hesitation with buying that Loftek jacket).

Pure speculation here, but the silicone treatment advertised as improving the wet performance of LoftTek might also inhibit kinking. Silicone is used in hair straightening products, for instance.

Most synthetic insulation (Climashield, Primaloft, Thinsulate....) is silicone encapsulated. all of the short staple kinks. The only one that seems to avoid that is the single strand (Climashield) variety.

I have looked for reviews of DIY projects made using UP. So far I haven't been able to locate any. Anyone have any insights to share? Thanks.
