This has got my attention! Is there any elastic shock cord adjustment at any point of the uq? How is the weight of the uq supported? Looking at the pics it appears to be just attached to the gathered ends with nothing else attaching itself to the hammock ? Thanks in advance !

The quilt is 6" shorter than the hammock (8"-10" shorter might have been better). The head end is gathered with a piece of paracord and clipped to the hammock CL. The Foot end is gathered with a doubled up loop of 1/8 shock cord (a stock wookie uses a thick elastic band). You need a little bit of stretch to ensure the UQ stays in contact with your hammock, without the UQ bearing your body weight.

You are correct that there is nothing else attaching the UQ to the hammock other than the gathered ends. This makes the UQ hang exactly like your hammock. This means no air gaps, no fiddling with suspensions and excess shockcord, and no restrictions to the feel of the hammock. I believe the wookie has a tie on the quilt that mates with one on the hammock to keep the quilt from coming off your shoulder but in testing this version I didn't find it necessary.

In the pic my brother has his feet hanging off the edge of the hammock (he didnt want to take off his shoes) which made a deep calf ridge. Thise would make a large air gap in a normal UQ, but you can see how a "wookie" quilt is pulled up into the hammock.

THANKS so much for the input!

So for those of you who have made a synthetic "Wooki"
The top shell is a rectangle fabric the same size as your hammock?,,,
To that you attach the climashield and outer shell in the size/area of your lay?

    The biggest question:
Is the climashield/outer shell sewn to the top shell with the top shell laying flat? or is the top shell gathered (as it would be when in use) while you sew it together?

    Thanks,
    Slack

Top shell is rectangular same shape as the hammock only slightly shorter. Elastic on one end to keep it tight against the hammock.

The insulation and outer shell are sewn onto it while flat, I don't know how you'd do it otherwise. The quilt needs to able to move and hang like a hammock.

Would just like to thank all you who contributed to this post, particularly hutzelbein who posted the link and has contributed various bits and bobs on various other related topics. I had a stab at making a full length symmetrical sooki/snooki from fibre pile and ripstop prior to registering (so couldn't see most photos). It's a work in progress but made all the easier thanks to you all.

I know this an older post, but i have a question for anyone who has made a diy wookie- does the body of the wookie have to be the same width of the hammock? If your hammock happens to be extra wide, where do you buy downproof fabric that is extra wide? Thx for the help!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

No, the width of the Wooki-clone does not have to be extra wide. I started with a fabric approximately 65" wide and found that it came up over both sides a couple of inches. My current Wooki-clone is about 57" wide and is still ample. However, if you are very tall and your hammock is extra long, a somewhat wider clone might be beneficial. It doesn't need to be as wide as the hammock, though.
