I just realized there are these different weights as I looked on Amazon. I have the lightweight. But since Buffs are about 82 miles long, I assume everyone "folds" it in half. So the thickness is more appropriate for even cold weather IMO. I also have a Columbia fleece gaiter which is crazy thick. I don't recall ever using it.

Is that like this thing I linked to a few posts back? I have one - have used it a few times. Actually pretty nice. A good driveway shoveling accessory.

Pretty sure mine is the lightweight (only one they had at the time), but if I bought another I'd probably get a the midweight. Both are far lighter than the really old ones I keep in my ski coat and my motorcycle jacket. The old ones (not Buff brand) cut the wind far better and also worked great in the hammock before I got the merino Buff which is softer and better to sleep in. I've also been known to stuff clothes in the Buff and use it as a pillow when I forgot my inflatable or use it as a handwarmer when sitting around camp on a chilly night.

Not quite. Mine's oldschool, just a staight tube of fleece nothing fancy. Now that I think of it I did use it for running in the winter...trying to reduce sucking in cold air.

They make these filters for patients on ventilators that capture moisture from your breath as you exhale, and then both release the moisture and warm the air when you inhale.

I tried working with one of these manufacturers last year to develop a mask out of the material (some use foam, others use a paper filter) but they didn’t see much of a market for it at the time. I’ve actually used a couple of these pinned inside of a balaclava and it worked very well.

Maybe one of our vendors would have better luck with getting some traction. The filters themselves are pretty cheap.

That would be great. I remember talking with two guys I ran into during my first winter backpacking trip years ago. We were talking about condensation and pretty much at the same moment we joked how we needed a mask to vent, something like fighter jet pilots wear. Well, half joking half serious.

    1. Keeps condensation off most everything under the tarp
    2. Keep TQ dry
    3. Blocks light from the moon or if I'm sleeping in late
    4. Keeps my nose warm (that's a HUGE plus)

And a pic of the VB bag liner and my sweet $19 Casio (high roller)

I just got back from a trip using this. Woah! Needs a separate thread...

Got down to 19 even in southern IN but I didn't take it there. The footbox was pretty wet on my TQ.

I ended up going to northern MI where it was 20 a couple nights later. I used it here...in fact, I wasn't going to but I jokingly thought to myself "BillyBob's going to want some feedback". I'll get that report up soon.
