diy tarp will this work? (MICHLEY LSS-505)

received a free sewing machine and was told it is not a toy but does look like one. have been reading about making tarps and did find a couple small machines used on it one was here, but a different machine. saw a video with one that looked the same around the foot area but was not zoomed out so not sure. would like to get enough 1.9 ripstop to make a hammock and tarp then dip the tarp.

just wondering if anyone has used or knows of one used for a tarp middle seem.

I don't know why it wouldn't work to sew ripstop. You'll have to be careful when you bunch up the fabric to push it through the machine on the right of the needle, as the small size means there is less room.

    Does it run on batteries????

I use my "thread injector" every so often to make a stuff sack, some tree straps, or maybe a stake bag. My skills kind of end there. I have a feeling that a skilled person with a mediocre machine could probably still do a good job. However, a person with questionable skills with an el-cheapo machine is probably going to make a big mess. This is especially true trying to sew thin and slippery material like ripstop. Definitely get some scraps or figure out some way to practice quite a bit before you start punching holes in some fabric you care about.

You don't need a powerful machine to sew a tarp. Try testing with some scraps and see if the feed dogs actually grab the fabric without a problem. You may be okay.
    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

One concern is it looks to be very light weight and may move a bit on a table while sewing. You want a nice stable machine for sewing long seams.

Great advice on here. Start with the hammock if you want to test the machine out, but I’d buy a tarp if I was starting out. Tarps can be purchased routinely for less than $100 and you’d be hard-pressed to duplicate that quality and weight by dipping 1.9 ripstop. If you want to try dipping, start with a DIY gravity filter bag.

went with buying a "cheap" tarp. now worried if this is normal and just needs to be sealed. the seam looks ok but both tie outs at the ends did the same thing.

My JRB 11’x10’ has done the same thing at the tie outs. That’s my only tarp so can’t say whether this or normal or not though.
