Hi there,
New member, first time poster. I was thinking it could be cool to put together a comprehensive list of US National Park Service campgrounds that allow hammock camping, and what hanging there is like. This way those who want to hammock camp can easily check ahead of time which parks allow it, because I've found that the park regulations on hammock camping are pretty inconsistent, and the NPS websites are often not explicit about their rules on hammocks. I figure it shouldn't take long for this community to put together a complete list...
I'll start by drawing from my own personal experience:
COLORADO
Rocky Mountain National Park
Glacier Basin Campground - allows hammocks, but trees sparse due to beetle kill
Great Sand Dunes National Park
Pinon Flats Campground - hammocks NOT allowed
MAINE
Acadia National Park
Blackwoods Campground - allows hammocks, plenty of trees
NEW MEXICO
Chaco Culture National Monument
Gallo Campground - hammocks NOT allowed
TENNESEE
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Hammock camping allowed only at backcountry sites, which are available by reservation only. Designated backcountry sites have plenty of suitable trees.
TEXAS
Big Bend National Park
Chisos Basin Campground - hammocks NOT allowed
