Just returned from 4 days in the Gila wilderness of Western New Mexico. The weather pretty much sucked (rain), and since hiking here means wading through knee-deep river every half-hour, it was pretty chilly. The sun came out for a while on my 3rd evening after I pitched my hammock, it was such a pretty spot that I had to take a few photos. You'd think that with all the Ponderosa pines around that it would be trivial to find a spot to hang, but it always seems like they are either too far apart, right next to each other, or have trunks that are so massive my tarp tieouts are too short. As it was, my lines barely were long enough for this hang.
This is the view down-canyon, the Ponderosa pines looked pretty nice backlit:
The view up the canyon slope from the entrance to my Warbonnet, before I put up my trekking poles in Porch Mode:
View up the canyon slope from the backside of my hammock. Just a few minutes later I had to climb the slope to get a nice view.
Of course an hour or so later it clouded up and rained like hell. That's life in the mountains. Only saw one human being in 4 days, but I did see a javelina in the backcountry for the first time; we see them around our house all the time, but hardly never in the wilderness.
