Oh man. Kentucky Derby is that Saturday!
Cinco De Mayo and Kentucky Derby - tequila and Bourbon - together at last
This may be most dizzy hang ever
And add in Randys running funnified humor and Yep another great hang.
Unfortunately the group campsite is not available on the weekend we are planning on. Not a big deal, we'll just grab a couple of adjacent sites and use those. They are $10/night, but we should be able to get 2-3 people/site in many of them. They are not reservable, it's first-come-first served.
It does mean we'll have to bring the shelters that folks have brought to the Fall hang in case of rain, etc. because we will not have a ramada.
The road normally opens up March 15 or so, but my guess is it'll be a little late this year due to all the snow. I feel sorry for the Arizona Trail through-hikers that have attempted early departures, they must be getting pounded. When the road is open I'll head up and scout things out, maybe pick some campsites I think will work for us. It's been a couple of years since I camped there.
The hiking trails are located just behind the campground entrance. We'll try to get a hike in most days.
My suggestion for a day trip would be to carpool over to the Coronado National Memorial/Monument (https://www.nps.gov/coro/index.htm). Google says it's about a 45 minute drive. There is a self-guided cave to explore, and a short drive up the road is Montezuma Pass, southern terminus of the Arizona National Scenic Trail and great views into Mexico. If we can be there at 10:00 Saturday we can take the ranger-guided cave tour, then take a little stroll on the AZT. Might be fun to hike down to the Mexican border where the actual start of the trail is (1.8 miles one-way). Might be some good photo-ops on the border ;-)
A couple of the guys that drive a long way come in a few days early or stay late. I recommend you make a stop at Kartchner Caverns (https://azstateparks.com/kartchner/). They are very accessible, only a little walking required, and quite impressive. Do the Throne Room tour.
Getting excited!

unfortunately mine and my friends was crushed by snow, I'll see if I can pick up another to replace mine so we have something.
If anyone would like to research the hiking trails where we are going, there is a brand-new 2nd edition that just came out of "Trails of the Huachucas":
