We move a LOT of threads every day. Leaving links is not an option. If we move a thread to the DM area and the OP is not a DM, we PM them so they know why their threads are gone.
If you want to find your threads or posts, you can open your profile and find them there: Latest posts or Threads started.

I never figured this policy out in the short period I helped moderate HF's.
Other vBulletin powered forums I frequent usually leave a "Moved" message behind and often a link. I'm guessing it is a simple feature to implement/activate and might require little to no extra work for our mods.
Sometimes these links do lead to a "you don't have correct privileges" type notice that tells me the thread was either removed or moved to a moderator only area.
