Dual layer of 1.1 RipStop versus single layer of 1.6 HyperD

Long time lurker, first post. I'm sure that this has been answered before in the annals of HF, but I couldn't find an answer...

Working on building my first gathered end hammock. I'm deciding between doing a double layer of 1.1 ripstop or a single layer of 1.6 HyperD.

I'm 6'1", 215lbs. I'm not hyper-focused on weight, but I do want something that compresses down well. It sounds like either choice would have a weight capacity around 300 lbs. I don't plan on using a sleeping pad, so double layer is not a necessity, but I gather that a DL has some other ancillary benefits (mosquito protection, a little more wind resistant, etc.)

Any thoughts on which direction you'd go? Would one be a lot more stretchy than the other? Other thoughts on durability, flexibility, options etc?

A side note, I just built a windsock out of some 1.1 calendared RipStop and love the fabric. (The calendaring really seems to block the wind well) I wouldn't trust my weight to a single layer of it, but they say two layers is about 1.75x as strong as one.

I appreciate any thoughts or input!

Not that I have any experience at all with double layer hammocks, but I'd go with the single layer of 1.6. You're well within the weight range for it. You don't need the double layer to hold a pad. A single layer of 1.6 will be less bulky than two layers of 1.1 (I think), so I don't see any real upside to making a double layer.

I have two Blackbirds - 1.1DL and 1.6SL. I bought the double years ago before I knew what I was doing. I like the 1.6 much better, for the overall feel/comfort and lighter, smaller packing. I find a little stretch eliminates, or at least substantially reduces, any calf ridge.

I'll add that my 1.1 was ripstop as so was the 1.6, not hyperD. But I have a feeling the results will be similar.

Just closing the circle, I went with a 1.6oz hyperD ripStop for my DIY hammock. I love it! I'm 6'1", 215 lbs and it holds me perfectly with just enough stretch to make it comfortable. For others looking to make their own DIY hammock, I highly recommend 1.6oz ripstop as a perfect blend of strength and weight/compressability. Mine compresses down smaller than a grapefruit.
