"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Ralph Waldo Emerson
I camped with some adventurous hangers. Some were bushcrafters and one was a horse trader. He made his living by trading things. At first I thought how odd. But then began to realize, each trade gave his customer something they wanted and at same time he was able to eke out a small gain.
Also I met DimJim at John Rock, he bought and sold merchandise online. At first I thought, what’s he doing that for? Then there are internet commerce billionaires.
Anyway, back to the bushcrafters. We had a campfire ringed with large rocks. The fire burned from sundown until lies were told and beverages consumed. After campfire burned out, a bushcrafter hung his hammock directly over-above the hot rocks. He was still alive in morning—I did not ask him how he’d slept.
There are a great many ideas out there—-some more viable than others
I can appreciate where your heart seems to be at with this whole idea. The problem I see with a "unified" setup is that it would favor those who already own similar components in their own setup. Not everyone hangs the same type of hammock, tarp, netting, insulation... Also, not a whole lot of vendors make ALL those components.
What about a something similar to those contests where everyone has to keep their hands on the car, and last to take their hands off wins, but in this case whoever can stay in their hammock longest wins? Not much of a spectator sport.

I propose these as events.

"Has the OP ever been to a group hang?" NO! I haven't. I was looking forward to the one I'm about to attend that is going to have over 200 people there. Judging from the comments on this post, more than half of you aren't people I would want to be in the same forest with. So thanks for ruining my anticipation of an upcoming trip.
"I seriously doubt any experienced hanger is gonna get excited about competitive hammock hanging." I'm experienced and I was excited about it. I even took the time to start my first thread on this forum talking about it. Then you came along. Thanks for ruining that for me.
"Group hangs are too laid back for that." Have YOU ever even been to a 200 person group hang that takes place over the course of four days? If you have, what did you do? Did you lay back in your hammock all day basking in the glory that is your sleep system? I'd hate to ruin that for you by floating the idea of an activity that you may choose to graciously decline to participate in.
You seem to really know what people think. I hope all of your other 13,000+ comments were as helpful to a new member of this forum as you've been to me in this thread. This is a very welcoming and open-minded community you guys have going on here.
~Thanks~

Take it from someone who considers himself a social retard ..having a dummy spit over some comments on a forum will alienate you quicker than steppin in poo unless they are extremely witty which yours isn't.
You put forward an idea that you've invested a lot of thought and it receives some negative attention, big deal let the idea simmer in peoples minds and if a group hang gets to boring someone will remember reading on HF this idea that could liven the party up bingo you become a genius!

Deep breath and hang in there. Don’t let a few folks comments deter you. Realize group hangs are made up of different folks. Some like to just lounge and do nothing. Some sit by the fire all weekend. Some like to go see all the hammock setups. Some like to do activities like hike or geocache or canoe. It’s not all one thing for everybody.
Personally I’d add that each time you put up your hammock suspension on a tree you have to run around said tree 4 times. Have fun with it.
