    Vehicle hitch based hammock stand

It痴 about to be nice hammock camping weather here on south padre island Texas and I want to do a little car camping on the beach with my blackbird. I have a motorcycle carrier that fits into my hitch that I知 thinking about modifying so it can also be a hammock stand. Anyway do this yet? I知 thinking it will be fairly easy to do. Each extension pole will pivot off the motorcycle ramp for transport. A few undercarriage locking links to hold it out and then I知 hanging off the back end of my Jeep.

If your suspension and receiver can tolerate the weight of a motorcycle, then I would think it would be possible to hang off the back. There was one DIY hammock support here a while back with an arm coming off the receiver and another off a HD custom front bumper. The hammock was hung along the side of the truck.

I think the biggest obstacle is getting adequate rain coverage when so close to a vehicle. I'd think hard about a separate hammock stand...

hopefully this image file shows up? This is my 2 minute mock up using some bed frames for the extension bars. I want them to fold flat for transport.

I had to offset the bed frames so that they'd not hit each other when I fold them down. some sort of ties will be needed on the bottom of the bed frame to the square tube to lock it into place. A couple of stainless carbiners will hold the head and foot end of my blackbird.

It will tolerate the weight just fine. It will not tolerate much torque though. Keep the weight balanced right to left/forward and back

so this guy has something similar but he is in no way an experienced hammock camper!
Once I get my welding skills underway I'm sure I'll have more ideas happening but for on the cheap with what I already have I think I can make this work. One concern is being a bit too close to the back of the vehicle. I do have a hitch extender if need be.

here is another version, but again, not experienced hammock campers.

Yep, welding is a great skill. I use a 240v MIG on steel and find that anything I can dream up I can make. Now, not everything I think up SHOULD be built, some of my ideas have been real stinkers. An oxy/acetylene torch setup for cutting and/or heating to shape with is a good tool to have as well. As hammocking from my Jeep goes, I envision an extended receiver with shaped steel rod attached, segmented, giving a springy effect. I think I've seen something to that effect on Amazon for hanging hammock chairs or something. I've just tied off to my rollover bar when I've needed, so I don't see a hanger in my future but it may be a good idea for someone.

I like the idea of re-purposing a bed frame into a hammock stand! :-)

I'm also working on a design that works off of the hitch. Eno's design is interesting, didn't even know it existed.

Looks like the best designs are eno and the last one. I have a motorcycle rack just like yours, except I cut it shorter so that it is the width of my Tacoma. I use it for my bicycles. I also have a receiver on both front and rear of the Tacoma that I've thought about angling off of for a rack. A person might be able to insert an extension in the last design for additional pole length for a tarp. Not one design showed a tarp, which is a must. At present I suspend one end off my ladder rack and the other off a tree or pole. I think I might start looking at something like the last design coming off the motorcycle rack base far enough out that I could have the tail gate and topper shell open. Should be able to conjure up a way for a 10x12 nylon tarp for a fly.
