The reason I'd make it shorter is to take a foot off the material and make a stuff sack that matches the hammock. Then they don't get confused as to whose is whose. They each picked colors. And then the resulting hammock is 10 ft instead of 11 ft. Not an issue of money. Just convenience based on what material I have .

I personally do not like an 11 foot hammock because I like to be able to reach the underquilt adjustment near the ends of the hammock. Like someone said, it probably will wear out before they become adults. I really think a 10’ hammock would be fine for anyone under 5 feet tall.
The essential part of me can not be discussed here. Ask me in person.

I say make them 10 or 11 feet and be done with it. Makes it more useful for anyone to be able to use them IMO.

Sounds like you have your mind made up, so I'd suggest you just go for it.

If you want to make hammocks for the kids that'll last them a life time, why even bother making them hammocks less than 11' ?

I'm 5'9" and use 10' DH Dariens, 64" width, one made with 1.2 and one with 1.7 Robic. Absolutely love 'em... for me, the short/wide geometry seems to 'lock in' the diagonal lay, and there is zero calf ridge with these.

Maybe I just got lucky, but the Smurfs' suggested dimensions have worked like a charm.

I say the 1 foot we're talking about, at their age, isn't going to even be noticed by them. And as far as the hammocks lasting a lifetime, that's quite an expectation. Personally I think maybe for some of these kids it could the beginning of a great journey and for others a fun experience with their friends.
