Remember that you are trying to pull the tarp out with the grip clips which is why it requires so much line. The further you can stake from the tarp the less it will pull down and the more it will pull out. The shorter the line the more downward pull it will have, serving little purpose unless you have some point (like a trekking pole) that is elevated off the ground to tie out to. I have about 20' of line per tie-out. I'm guessing that is about the same flexibility Shug has with his shock cord.
