Great tips @tallpaul. I have to switch my guylines around because everybody in my family can tighten their tarps under the tarps. I can’t because I set mine up first with just zing it to a stake. Any way to change a guy line from a triangle ring to the stake?

I typically have a bowline knot on my guylines and/or hardware. Then I larkshead them onto wherever I want them. With that said, I don't have any hardware on my current guyline setup - I attach the guyline to the stakes with a marlin spike hitch.

Do you use just a stick for your marlin spike or do you have a toggle? And, if you have a toggle, have you tried the j-bend as an alternative?

Edit: Just wanted to add, thanks for the awesome collection of tips!

The stake _is_ the toggle in this setup.

Agreed the stake is the toggle in this scenario. The MSH is so simple I stick with it.

Here’s my stake out method. Note I’m a backpacker and moved to this due to the simplicity and the quick(er) setup.

I carry 6 stakes for my tarp with doors and WB XLC. 4 MSR groundhogs and 2 lighter weight shepherd hooks for the doors. All guylines are attached to the stake via an MSH.

I tested forgoing stakes a couple trips to see if I could use sticks (I took the stakes but acted as if I didn’t have them). I spent more time than I wanted to looking for sticks and found the MSRs often held better. I do use a stick for the hammock pullout, or if I use the tarp guylines attaches to the side pullouts.

I didn't realize before you were using the MSH on your guylines, I have not seen that before. I'm with you on the sticks for stakes - just not worth the time for the lesser reliability. Now, if there's a heavy log or rock I could tie off but still move to a perfect position (or a root that's already there), well I might not bother with a stake.

If you already use a stick you're not gonna save any weight by learning the j-bend, so no need to learn anything extra there. One knot that I recently discovered and love is the farrimond friction hitch - it's essentially a prusik you can tie on an end. It's very quick to tie (and untie, even after load!), and my new replacement for the adjustable grip hitch.

Probably the two easiest ways to have the adjustment at the tarp, each uses a loop of cord (static or shock) added to each tarp attachment(where the triangle/d-ring is): Hookworms or hook Linelocs. Larkshead the guyline to the stake.

The Linelocs would entail using something bigger than ZingIt/LashIt. That, of course, is only an issue if there is a need/desire to shave grams.
