Ear plugs reduce the worry for me. Typically my imagination may get the best of me on occasion.
Using after day 2 or 3 it seems normally and I don’t waste any time worrying.

Being out in the woods alone does not bother me as I am never alone...there is always Me, Myself and I to keep us company. I find it very peaceful out in the woods.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I hear you and often find myself unsettled when surrounded by the unknown, especially in the dark of night. That said, it's facing the unknown that brings a sense of adventure to hammock camping. You never know exactly how things will hang, or if the weather will turn sour and threaten your comfort, or if something will break requiring spontaneous creative field solutions, or perhaps a wild animal decides to explore your cozy nook and destroy your food supply. Not knowing exactly what will happen is all part of the fun and excitement of adventuring into the wild, IMHO. If mother nature decides to get ya in the middle of the night, at least it was an adventure and not just a trip down the stairs at home or a car accident on the way to work...

As far as other people are concerned, I echo others sentiments. I feel safer in the woods than in civilization.

Hammock camping or tent camping, it's only a thin nylon barrier. I've been doing it for years, not much bothers me anymore. Camped solo and with groups many times. Snoring is the worst thing out there! Spent 7 years on a mountain rescue team with most weekends in the woods looking for lost folks which conditioned me pretty well with all kinds of noises. Spent nights waiting for sun up with deceased folks who fell off cliff's, spent nights in snow storms, rain storms and beautiful nights under the stars. What I'm getting at is yes there are noises but not to much to worry about if you take the right precautions, food hung from a tree away from camp, etc. Get out there and enjoy yourself, noises won't bother you after spending time in the woods. Oh, I also carry a 9mm, helps with the noises thing LOL.
Rick...
This is why I always hang 10 ft high.
Like many, it is the two-legged animals I worry about most. I have gotten weirded out dispersed camping from the Jeep since the sites are often just off a forest road. When in the backwoods, choosing a site well off the trail makes me feel much more comfortable.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.
I've been doing lots of solo backpacking and immensely enjoy it. I feel like when my time is up, I'd rather be doing something fun. I hang way off trail in very secluded spots in areas filled with wildlife.
We jump in our cars without a thought, knowing that tens of thousands per year never come back from that experience.

"Life is a Project!"
I just got in from walking the dogs out back. I was standing near a large Hemlock watching them run and probe under the dead falls. A squirrel walked down the side of the Hemlock and barked/screeched at me. I took a few steps away but he went back up the tree.
It's the little things in nature that make life worth living. There isn't anything out there purposely hunting us.
