Only time I freaked out was when the Coyote pack started howling and were within 30 yards of me.... Made the hair stick up. Same when the Timber wolves were close in, up in Canada. But, no their howling is calming the group because we spooked them. I fear the black bear not one lick. They are just big scavengers. Keep a clean camp and they will not bother you. Only thing I get concerned about is drunken 2 legged critters. Once came across the most deliverance looking set of hillbillys actually out at night coon hunting. Turned out they were pretty nice guys once we established I was not out to interfere with their activities. Gave me a nice lesson on the art of using dogs etc.

I agree, I worry more about the people, than the animals.

"Bulletproof Hammock!" The latest film directed by Quentin Tarantino!

I hear they've already started work on the sequel, "Artillery-Proof Hammock."

There's another film coming out called "Fireproof Hammock: I Hang Over the Dying Fire."

I can't say I've felt much of a fear of being alone in the woods since I was a small child. Throughout my 20s, and even to this day in my mid 30s, most of my time spent in the woods has been long after dark (due to my work schedule). I've become so accustomed to life in the woods under the moon and stars that it just feels as normal as being in town during the daytime. Last time I had a bit of a scare (more of a startle really) was a couple months ago when I spotted a Big Foot watching me at camp. Only felt a slight bit uneasy for a short moment though. Nothing that really disrupted my trip.

    I prefer to be alone.

The first time I ever went hiking on the AT (in the early 90s) there was a convict who escaped from prison, and he was apparently on the AT. I slept with a hatchet. Since then, I haven't had any worries.

I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

I get freaked out when I'm not hammock camping.
As for solo, I just got back from a 5 day solo in the Adirondacks and it was outstanding. I went 48hrs without a spoken word. Ahhhhhhhh.

But with camping, you are out in the woods, far away from help, with basically total strangers or even all alone, with nothing but thin nylon over you. With a tarp cover, you can't even see what's out there and coming. It's a little crazy when you think about it.
Not really. Being alone in the woods is a great experience. I put my ear plugs in and go to sleep. Its a lot easier to calm the what ifs if you cant hear all the stick breakers outside your tarp at night.

I feel a little safer being up off the ground.

Here in MN, it’s perfectly legal for me to bring a firearm camping, but I don’t usually do that anymore. It’s a considerable amount of extra weight, and I haven’t been close to needing it.

I concur with everyone else. Camp away from where the drunks will be (they don’t tend to choose the kinds of sites we tend to like, anyway), and be disciplined in storing and preparing food.

I’ve only been on one solo trip, but it’s one of the best experiences I’ve had. I’m looking forward for the opportunity to go again.

A lot less than being in a tent! In a tent, you can’t see what’s around you, it can hear you unzip to escape, you’re on the ground and at an ego disadvantage.

In my net less hammock, I can peer under my tarp to see what’s out there. I can sneak out one side or the other quietly, from an upright position. I’ve given late night Sasquatch visits quite a bit of thought.
