Whats In That Stuff Sack ?

I have a separate paper featuring several columns: a list of all the gear, its weight and in which sack each thing is.
I also wrote some common attribute on the stuff sacks, like "20F", "0F"...

I have a Word document that lists all my possible gear choices along with their weights. I use this to create individual checklists for each hike so I a) don't forget to pack something and b) know how much my pack will weigh. It's useful when I'm trying to decide between different choices.

This still doesn't solve my problem of deciding which black stuff sack contains which UQ. But if this works for you, great.

A data base is good for deciding which gear to take but does not ID which stuff sack contains what unless it is labeled in some fashion ( I do have a data base that lists all my gear ).

would not help me as I have a bunch of DIY Army ACU and Marpat Camo hammocks.

As an avid diy'er, I find customizing each stuff sack down to the smallest component that contents are constructed of helps me easily keep track of things.
I may have multiple Multicam hammocks, but no two are exactly identical. One may have a green reflect-it ridgeline, so I'll use that on the stuff sack's cordage. A grey lash-it ridgeline uses grey lash it for the stuff sack's cord. Another may use black or olive grosgrain in their construction, so a black or olive tab pull tab gets added to the stuff sack. My LL quilts may be matching, but I made stuff sacks out of the same fabrics (Multicam outer and woodland inner) and added a black grosgrain tab to designate the uq's stuff sack (since the TQ has no grosgrain used). They are half Multicam, half woodland with grosgrain distinction.
My Cloakware Chameleon..in a Cloakware stuff sack. My fire making kit, in Dutch's fire printed Xenon. And so on...

OCD...yes, but I find enjoyment in customizing my sacks down to the last detail and it's helpful at the end of the day.

Great tip and I do it with more then my camping gear. The only difference is I use some black gaff tape which is easily removed with no residue.

Nice idea! Personally, most of my stuff sacks are DIY, and I often repurpose (or steal) stuff sacks when I need one of a certain size, so permanently marking them would not be a good idea. In fact, I probably have at least a dozen unused stuff sacks (DIY and purchased) waiting for just the perfect contents, that were all formerly used for something else.

i tied a ribbon on my wife's ridge runner stuff sack. it is enough to tell our two Warbonnet bags apart. (most of the time) grabbed the wrong bag on a trip to yates place. thanks to @tallpaul for the opportunity to try out a different set up one night.
