CNN is saying Beaufort could get a storm surge of 9 to 13 feet. That's the biggest storm surge expected for anywhere in the range of Hurricane Florence.

Good news: Tensa4 stand fits on my narrow front porch allowing me to ride out hurricane outside of the gloomy interior of the house since I have lost power. I can see outdoors to read a book.

Bad news: Rain is blowing sideways enough that I will need creative vertical tarp installation to prevent underquilt from wetting now that I feel the need of one.

We have been Raleigh past few days. Found a great place to take Sam for day care as he does not like being cooped up in my son's apartment. Parts of Raleigh lost power but we lucked out as it came back on after a couple of hours. Have seen some panic buying going on. According to news the roads might open Tuesday so we can go and check on house. Got some heavy duty tarps for the roof.

We have heard that our whole county is without power and there are no estimates on when it might be restored.

Our neighbors who stayed have been sending us photos. Front of our house lost some shingles on the roof. Don't know about the back side. Whole area was flooded at one point. The friends we lend our generator to kept the generator going non stop even though we told them to only run it for a few hours at a time to keep freezer and fridge cold and went thru the gas they had, Now they have no power.

Looks like the roads are open enough for us to make it home so we are going to try to get home tomorrow. No word on power.

The Neuse River up this way in my area looks just like a regular rain storm came through. All is good here.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.

I don't think the Southern Terminus of the Neusiok Trail will be hikeable for a bit.

I don't think most of the trail will be hikable due to flooding and I am sure plenty of down trees. As the skeeters are out in force now I am not going anywhere near the trail anytime soon.

We got power back on a little less than an hour ago. So no power down here for 10 days. Going to take a long shower in the AM as I have to give the hot water heater a chance to get hot.

Thought about hanging out in back yard but decided not to as I did want to fight the skeeters and I have to cut down some damaged tree limbs. At least I will get some good pecan for my smoker.
