    double layer r value

I have been using single layer hammocks for backpacking this summer.
Is there any benefit in using my double layer for winter camping? Mainly asking
about any wind resistance or insulation value.

I have sufficient UQ for temps the 20's and above. I guess Im asking
if I can get extra 5 degrees from my double layer? I am thinking
I can use my Loco Libra 50 down to 45 degrees if I can get about
5 degrees from second layer on the hammock.

I understand the 10 degree safety swing but always have merino
and down jacket for extra warmth.

    Thank you in advance.

    No.

The increase in R value is negligible. It exists, but not enough to really count in the way you're trying to apply it.

In high summer heat... you might notice it cutting a little breeze.
With the UQ on in winter... it's not your outer layer any more.
Down is always the lightest insulator... another 5 ounces or more of hammock fabric would more than bump you from a 50 to a 40* if you were only looking at weight.

If you're just trying to make what you got work... carry an extra baselayer rather than a DL hammock.

That said... give it a shot in the backyard.

If another layer of hammock was insulation (which it's not), then everybody would be doing it. And don't forget your merino and down jacket will be compressed, which makes it pretty much useless for bottom insulation.

My HG 30 degree quilts are about 2lbs. My LL 50s are 1lbs.
I was thinking I could save close to 1lbs if I used the LL in 40s.

Tip: put your down jacket between the quilt and hammock if you want a targetted booster.

But, no, an extra layer of nylon does nothing to warm you.

So there is no added value from a second layer of fabric from wind or cold? I have slept
tyvek and merino in my hammock at 52. I just assumed the second layer in hammock
would have some value. The tyvek merino accident is what made me think about the
    DL hammock to begin with.

I do respect your opinion and value your judgment and appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Opoopee, Many do buy an under quilt protector which is just a piece of breathable nylon. It can add several degrees to your hammock insulation.
The second layer is loosely hung outside of the underquilt. I believe it acts like a wind breaker. But just a second pice of nylon up against your skin I don't believe it would do anything.

Great, that makes sense. The mishap with tyvek just had me wondering.
I did have every piece of anything under me along with the tyvek. I also
had a nylon wind shirt on for warmth. I definitely will follow wiser minds.
The extra pound not that big of deal for 5 miles back.

I apologize if I seemed argumentative. I was hoping that the extra
layer did in fact give me about 5 degrees. Now that I think about it
I also did not stake out my WP tarp and cocooned it around underneath
me creating an effect similar to the protector in your pic.

most tyvek's are barely to not breathable. You may have experienced something called vapor barrier.
Some swear by it other say they are laying in a puddle of their own sweat.

Oh you did not come across as argumentive some of our members just post in a matter-of-fact way. You'll get used to it.
