    Cargo straps = suspension system

I've seen lots of suspension bling and wonder what the big deal is.

For the past couple of years I have just used a pair of cargo straps from my tool box (Just the straps, not the ratchet). I hook the straps to the tree with the hooks on the strap, and then tie a marlin hitch/slip knot high up on each end. I hook the hammock to the loops, loosen or tighten the loops until I'm happy with my hang, and then tie another slip knot at the back of each knot to act as a stop so the knot doesn't loosen up further. Done, plus the slip knots on either end are handy for hanging gear. When I pack, I just yank and the knots come undone. What advantage is there to all the others?

PS: As a tip, don't go for dollar store straps. Use a pair rated for at least 400 lbs. Found that out the hard way when I looked for a second set.

They are just choices and options. Weight is a factor to many. Some do not like knots. Some like no metal in their suspension system.
That is what a lot of us like about hammocks.....no one way.
If you are satisfied with your system consider yourself well set.

Some are lighter weight & less bulky (Kevlar, dyneema), which has the same effect on your wallet. Also, avoid nylon straps that stretch, get polyester. There's a 1,000 ways to hang your own hang.

doing it however you want to do it is mostly the big deal

some folks take a lot of pride in having the smallest/lightest setup

some folks love using bling to replace complicated knots

some folks love using complicated knots

some folks love the easy, infiinite adjustments of cinch buckle type setups

there's not really any 1 right way to do it (several wrong ways tho!)

it's pretty rare that you'd run into a random camper who has the identical setup, and that's the fun part

HYOH all the way up and down. Personally, as a UL backpacker I'm all about the lightest and absolutely simplest solution for the job, which for me is a set of dyneema straps that weigh less than 2 oz. That's it. Connect to hammock CLs with J-bend.

Are the venom straps not friendly to a becket ? Or do you just prefer the J-bend ? I'd like a lighter strap that can hold up to rough bark.

Not a huge deal either way, works fine with becket although I've tested and hung on both of them a fair amount and just came to prefer J-bend... a skosh easier to release IMO.

I also use cargo straps for over 8 years. The same ones. They are a breaking strength of 600lbs and working load of 200lbs. Not what most would use.

But these inexpensive and lower weight strength straps also have some stretch to them even though they are poly. So I use an Amsteel Lead and Dutch Speed Hook to connect to CL on hammock. Also instead of using a loop to connect to tree, I use an ADutchable Clip to change the length of the strap so most of the suspension is 7/64 Amsteel.

So my reason to "complicate" my suspension a little is to avoid stretch in my suspension. Also, I like to play and fiddle with my kit. OK. Mostly to fiddle. And play.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
