Pad and UQ - use together?

So last year I made a Costco UQ, and it's great for late spring to early fall, but I hammock camp year round with scouts. So I have been adding insulation with a foam pad inside the hammock. But I know many have double layer hammocks that the pad slides between the layers. And I hate fighting with the pad inside the hammock.

So couldn't one put the pad between the hammock and UQ? Would that work?

This is not generally recommended as the weight of the pad will pull the under quilt away from the hammock and the tight fit is where all the warmth of an under quilt is preserved. If you are going to be hanging with the Scouts more than a few times then get a good under quilt and you'll never look back.

If you have a double layer hammock, then the pad could go between the layers when needs to supplement the underquilt.

Yah, but mine is a single layer. Otherwise I would do that. Guess I'll have to continue with UQ + pad on the inside.

Perhaps I should get or make a second UQ, double layer that way.

I've just been out on a trip which I knew would require some pitches on the ground, so I took both a pad and an underquilt. I have to agree with Trailslug, the pad actually pushed the underquilt away from the hammock and made the whole thing colder. I was warmer when I left the pad out and used the underquilt alone.

I tried a pad and underquilt together on a winter camping trip with my double layer Raven and it was not great. I find the pad still moved around and half way through the night I was half on it and half off...I tried it a few nights and after that went to using an underquilt only (had to fiddle with it to get it to snug right up)

All that is fine but eventually, when it gets really cold, you're going to want a proper UQ that's rated for the conditions.

Many of the budget or econ quilts are very reasonably priced and will save you a whole heap of hassle in the long run. The colder it gets, the more sense this will make!

I have used thin pads together with an underquilt plenty of times, because I'm a very cold sleeper, and it did work for me reliably. I never had any issues with the pad pushing the underquilt away. If anything, the underquilt fit better, because the pad smoothed out all hills and valleys. This way, the gaps are between you and the pad, not between the hammock fabric and the underquilt, where the top quilt / sleeping bag can't fill them.

Maybe if you were to use a thick and/or stiff pad, it might open gaps, but in this case I would expect the pad to be pretty warm anyways.

By the way: this is not a recommendation to use a pad - with or without an underquilt - in the hammock. I only use one when I have to, because I am a very cold sleeper and really don't want to carry a -20° underquilt all the time. The last time I supplemented my 0° underquilt with a thin foam pad was when the temperatures dropped to 40° in May. It did its job, but it also produced a lot of condesation (for my standards).
