Floating porch mode with single center pole mod?

Hi, I have a Superfly which I've used for years, but I've been seriously considering sending my tarp in for a 2qzq center pole mod. I'd prefer two end pole mods, but they only do the center pole. I've even considered at some point buying a UGQ Winter Dream hammock, 12' with the end pole mods and the door with the nice snaps, but I like my Superfly so much that it seems excessive to get a second tarp, plus it wouldn't be in the budget for a while anyway.

So, my question is, can you get a floating porch mode from a center mod? By which I mean, you don't need to stake out pull-outs- you just stake out the bottom ties like you normally would, but with a much longer line so that the pole can pull the tarp up into a porch mode on its own. This is what I mean:

Can you do the same thing with the center pole mod? I know you get that with the end pole mods. There are external pole mods you can use (like from Dutchware), where you tie your pull-outs to poles that rest above/on the tarp, but the tarp shape that you get isn't as good for shedding wind/rain, particularly since I use a split ridge and so the poles would be resting on the top of my tarp and creating indents, rather than a nice tunnel shape.

Anyone have any personal experience with this? I've tried to research it and have come up with a tentative answer of "maybe?" so I'd love to hear from someone who has first-hand experience with the center pole mod.

while pole pockets are awesome, you can accomplish an almost identical mod yourself, for under $2 (plus whatever poles you buy)

warbonnet has nice grosgrain tie out loops for their d-rings, right?

you can simply snip the spine, and then insert a beastee D ring onto the existing loop

the 1/2 inch size accepts the male pole tip end almost like it was made for it20180429_151154.jpg

With a single pole you'll end up with a beak. It will narrow your visibility. Do you have the poles already? Get some of the alligator tarp clips and snap them on where the pole will be. Experiment with placement and see what you like.

    Thanks, everyone, for the input.

XJ35S, the pole mod is in the center, so I wouldn't think you would end up with a beak. You end up with a tunnel, same as with the two end pole mods.

Tikker, I'll keep that DIY option in mind, although the pole mod is actually quite affordable - $15.

Floating porch mode with single center pole mod?

    Floating porch mode...

I have DIY pole pockets similar to the 2QZQ pockets I had on my Superfly.

Easing out the 'front' guy lines does create a floating porch mode with no trekking pole needed and it does look much like a beak.

Ah, I see. That's very helpful - thank you.

Can work with either or both corners up..

I prefer half porch mode with just the foot end up. Keeps the tarp a bit tighter.

I added a center pole to my first tarp using a quick mod to test it out and I'm still using the same method many years later because it transfers easily to all my tarps. The poles need to extend a few inches outside the tarp a little bit when deployed and tight under the tarp. Take a piece of gros-grain ribbon just large enough to fit around your pole. It should be long enough to have ends that can be tied to the tarp loop. Fold the ribbon in half, then sew a few inches up both sides to create a pocket for the pole. Tie the pocket to the tarp loop and insert the pole. Make a second one for the other side. I use a tarp ridgeline that goes under the tarp, so I use a prusik to tie the pole over the center line and be able to keep it in place there.

I'll second Tikker's suggestion. I've been using the Dees and they're perfect for this.
But for the grace of God, there, I go...
