    Fabric recommendations for DIY hammock

I've been contemplating replacing my DIY hammock because it has so many nights on it. I've forgotten which fabric it is, maybe Argon, but it's very stretchy. I want to try a stiff fabric with very little give to it. I weigh a bit under 200 pounds.

I have always used a single layer, 1.5 +/- oz weight fabric, which I like for the combination of lightweight, packability & durability.

Many new fabrics have come out since my last DIY. I do not care about the feel of it, because I always were clothing in the hammock.

What do you recommend, before my old hammock let's me down, literally.

I have made a few hammocks using the 1.7 oz RObIC XL from RSBTR and I love the feel of it. The colors I have used come in 74" width which makes a nice wide hammock.

I love Hexon 1.0 but it is stretchy.

My second favorite is Hexon 1.6 - I can't tell a difference in stretch between it and my 1.9oz fabrics so that would be my choice. Unnoticeable total weight differential compared to your 1.5oz.

I think my favorite hammock fabric is polyester suit lining from Joann Fabric. It's not ripstop or anything fancy but it feels nice and makes a firm hammock. I think my current hammock is hexon but it has more stretch than I prefer, not so much that I don't sleep in it a lot, but still, I'd like to make another firm hammock from suit lining.
    Good luck,

Now there's a different approach. I could then make a quilt set using tuxedo fabric. You know, for formal hangs! LOL

Thank you Red, you always think outside the box!

Ha! You're welcome. A nice set of ruffles down the middle of your tuxedo UQ would look pretty fancy.

I have made hammocks out of both the 1.7 Robic and 2.2 Hex70. Similar feel to both of them in my opinion. I too like very little stretch.

Mike, looks like we're both in the same boat.

My only hammock for years has a hole a few inches from the edge and I think it should be retired. But Summer's Last Gasp Hang is around the corner.

I hope we both find a suitable fabric with all this new fangled fancy stuff.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

My first DIY was 1.6 Hyper D.. That's an awesome choice for fabric. Very soft and a very minimal amount of stretch. Very nice to work with too. I weigh 185 - 195 depending on the season. I thought I would never like a different fabric... then I tried Robic 1.2.

My most recent DIY hammock, a Half Wit style hammock, is in the Robic it is a wonderful fabric. It has a unique diamond pattern to the ripstop which reduces the stretch so a lighter fabric can be used without the added stretch. Also very nice to work with. I suspect the Robic 1.0 would be equally comfortable and I was close to using that fabric, but I am glad I used the 1.2 and would do so again.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Don't be too hasty Juan, you may need the extra ventilation for a Florida hang in September! LOL
