    Money money money!

Arrrgh! Why do I have to be a skinflint ???

Two years of camping using a $30 Eno knockoff, a DYI Costco UQ, a Chrickey bugnet, and I now want to move up to NICE things.

    BUT ....

Including shipping and the exchange rate to Canada, and we find:

Dutchware Chameleon Wide plus bugnet and suspension = $300
    Hamock Gear Econ 0 = $265

So over $560 for my ideal setup.

WHY DOES THIS SEEM LIKE A FORTUNE TO ME???

You could always look at Little Shop of Hammocks, a Canadian-based company, though their prices don't look much cheaper.

Buy once, cry once, I guess. That's the way it works with me. If I wasn't spending it on gear, I'd be spending it on something else. This way I'm more satisfied in the long run.

Could you have it shipped to a border town Post Office and make the drive to get it? Though with gas and tolls. Shipping and duty tax may be cheaper. Need to make a camping friend in the states who'll bring it up to you I guess.

Some words of advice on spending the money on quality gear. Especially if you are outdoors allot.
I made most of my purchases on 3 different Hammock setups a number of years back. I have them always ready to go, whether it is for me, family or friends. Tarps, Lines, Hammocks, Quilts, All the accessories for each setup. I keep them in their own separate bags. So, my point is I have over $2000 invested in these. Now, Almost 5 years into Hammock camping I have them ready, almost any weather condition. The quality setups have lasted well and never let me down. I use them allot in the area I live & camp.
I have a few buddies I go with who opted for the cheapest gear they can find. The failures show it.
Don't feel bad spending the money on quality hammock gear.

It seems like a lot of money (more so) if you look at spending it all at once. Imagine if you saw all the food you'll consume in a lifetime as one giant edible mountain right in front of you. You'd likely say to yourself something to the effect of "I could never eat all that. That's way too much!" If you take the "one piece at a time" approach though over the course of many days, weeks, or months, then it's much more manageable and doable. The lesson here: Acquire upgrades piece by piece as you can. Ya don't have to go whole hog all at once.

At least your cost of living in Canada is cheaper than here in the USA. Don't complain about the $560 for a good setup - you'll save that amount vs the US in medicine alone, not to mention cheaper beef and bread than the US.

Let's be honest, what we do is a hobby. As far as hobbies go I would think hiking/camping gear is quite reasonable compared to many others because we use the gear repeatedly.Compared to golfing, fine dining, travel vacations, well, you get the idea.Just be careful to buy what you really want the first time so you don't wind up like me with several tarps, hammocks, alcohol stoves, rain gear, footwear, and the list goes on.......Looks like you're off on the right foot with your dream list though.
