I just sew it directly on as well. The more experience I got under my belt, I don't have to pin or iron at all now. It's all in the hand technique

    Just a quick question:

I have never made any DIY items, but I was interested in making my own tarp. If you finish the edges with grossgrain, how exactly do you make the material (GG) lay flat on cat cut edges. It seems to me, in my zero experienced eyes, that you may get "bunching" of material.

    Yes, no, maybe so?

You can burn the new edge over a lit candle or use a lighter. Thats my poison. I've used the wood burner before, too. either or?

This has not been a problem for me. Take your time, I hate ripping stitches.

Ah, this will shrink the GG ala shrink wrap? Cool. Thanks for the info.

Hmm, is the angle of a cat cut not aggressive enough to cause bunching? Interesting. I'll just have to give it a shot. Thanks.

Don't think so. I think gargoyle was just addressing the question of how to melt the edge of the silnylon to prevent fraying. If you fold the GG over the cut edge and sew it, you might be able to skip this step. If you choose to melt the edge you would do it before you sew on the GG.

That is correct, WV. are you psychic? My cut gg also tends to fray, so I singe it lightly with the candle or lighter, also.

Nope, not psychic. It just made sense, and you've been known to make sense in the past, so ...

One thing I'd recommend - make the short edges straight (the 5' sections coming off the ridgeline). You still get a tight pitch, but having those edges straight gives better coverage when you want to close the ends off.

    More like this:
Cool...thanks for the tip. 2 less curves to deal with.

Still waiting on my sil, but I think I am ready to conquer this beast. Hope my flat felled seam turns out good.

I thought about using an accent color. They had some purple that would have looked cool with the black. I was afraid any mistakes would be more noticeable, though.

I am using simple webbing loops for the tie-outs. Any recommendations on what width webbing to use?
