    How Young is Too Young

I think my 2yr old son would enjoy a small, low-strung hammock to play around in (not sleep in...yet?), but how old do you guys think a kid needs to be before they can safely negotiate one? He climbs all over everything, but a swinging hammock is a lot different than typical household and playground items.

Just make him one, let him climb and swing and play. He is a kid. Honestly kids will be kids and as long as you start by teaching him how to get in and out, and it is low to the ground he will be ok. Will he fall out? YEP! Will he get hurt? OH YEAH! But you know what, that is part of child hood....we did things that may have hurt us, but we lived with a few scrapes and scratches and bruises and maybe a broke bone or 2....

I had my hammock set up in a spare room and my 3-year-old was having a good time playing with it. But 3 years (almost 4) wasn't quite old enough to understand the whole concept 100%. He ran thru it without ducking one time and totally got clothes-lined by it. Slung him back into the ground hard and banged his head. If it wasn't carpet, I think we would have had some trouble. Or even a smaller/normal sized kid. Somehow he is very big for his age though...the milkman must be 6'6".

Sure, I get that he'll fall out from time to time, but if the physical capabilities of a 2 yr old are such that a hammock will be frustratingly and chronically injurious, that's a different matter. I'm just doing my due diligence, so when I float the idea with the wife I have some anecdotal data to back it up with, because I know exactly what look she's going to give me when I mention it.

Never too young. We have had a <1yo sleep in a hammock at HangCon 2017.

Remember, the sides come up in a Gathered End hammock so you sink into it.

Also, just don't hang it too high. 6"-12" off the ground until he gets used to it and it becomes a regular part of life. Kids are amazing at their ability to conform and/or adapt.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

These pictures really make me wish that I had discovered hammocking when my son was still an infant. He loves sleeping in his hammock since shortly after turning 14 years. I'm pretty sure he would have taken to it even sooner had he had the opportunity.
