My beagle Joey sleeps in the hammock with me when we go hiking/camping.
There is a conflict regarding bedtime: Joey is accustomed to going to bed at 8 pm, and I'm more of a midnight person. We usually agree on a 10 pm crash time.

Daughter and dog usually sleep in a tent. Otherwise I just use a cheap Walmart bugnet and pad under the same tarp.
I've been packing a Alcott pup tent. I don't consider it prohibitively heavy. I roll up my second hiking pole (I hike with one pole, but like two for setting up the hammock tarp) and tent/tarp stakes and stick it on the back pack side under the compression straps. If the bugs aren't too bad I just roll it out flat and put the Z-Rest pad on top. The Z-rest goes in my pack first as kind of a pack liner. All in all, she really prefers to lay out in the weather, but I go prepared to give her a comfy trip too. A Cave Creek Palace would be nice, but the Alcott is tougher and amenable to having her on a lead at nights, i.e. wolves and coyotes abound.
