I understand now. Good for you getting out when a lot of us wuss-out due to temps this time of year. At least it looks like you could swim in the falls so that's a bit of relief.

I visited the site of one of our local hangs the week following the event. Everyone did a marvelous job with LNT, I was feeling all warm of happy.
Having the entire hollow camp area to choose from, I was soon startled to notice that most of the places people had probably been hanging a week beforehand, at least looked to me to have widowmakers too near all of them.
Had to scramble back in the woods to a pair of trees up on the hill a bit that I had used before to feel safe.

I am normally hanging in a nice well maintained park, all dead wood is kept cleared. It was pretty shocking to see so much dead wood!!! If that place ever gets hit by a good storm there could be some serious damage

You got out and had a good time with friends/family in what looks to be a very pretty place.
That’s all good in my book!
Fail is perhaps a bit too strong, maybe disappointment? Exercising your common sense about site selection and avoiding limbs falling on you in the night is a win. You got some great photos and the food looked particularly good. Plus you got out against the odds, so that's something too.
"...the height of hammock snobbery!"
Kudos for getting out there. Humidity is tough dealing with, I'll grant you that. The entire East Coast this Summer has been particularly hot and humid. Great pics, and this experience has made you a more savvy camper. The food looked great.
At least you got out, that's more important. And good for you for checking the trees and keeping everyone safe.
Love the McKee area, it is gorgeous! Haven't hiked/hammock camped there, but do get down there several times a year for horseback riding/camping from my friends' place.
