    TX > Fairfield Lake State Park>November 8-11, 2018 - 10th Annual Texas Fall Group

It’s HOT. There’s more triple digit temps to come! The Texas Butt Bake Hang has just wrapped up and I’m praying for snow. At least I’m ready for some cool weather and that means fall! This post is long so hang in there until the end.

It’s time to start talking about November and the 10th Annual Texas Fall Group Hang! Here’s a “save the date” and link to our FAQs. The official planning spreadsheet will be up in the next few days.

Mark November 8 - 11, 2018 on your calendar for the 10th Annual Texas Fall Hammock Hang at Fairfield Lake State Park. #TFH2018

It’s a great time to renew friendships, make new ones, and play with gear, so don’t miss out.

For our 10th year of this annual event, it wouldn’t seem right to be any time or place than we’ve done before, so let’s meet the weekend of the second Saturday in November at Fairfield Lake State Park once again!

What started with a handful of folks from South/Central Texas in early 2009 has surpassed the century mark with past participants from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, and places forgotten or unknown.

In some years, this planning thread has become a multipage read with some of the details lost in the conversations. To keep the conversations going, yet simplify the scrolling, the FAQs and all the details needed are posted in a Google Doc for everyone’s review.

If you have not been to this event before, don’t worry; details and FAQs are posted and should be a help. Please take a few moments and scroll through some of last year’s planning and trip reports. It will help answer questions you may have and maybe create some that can be addressed on this thread in the weeks to come. Again, so we’re all on the same page, if you haven’t been to this event before, or if you’ve been to every one since we started, please take a few minutes to read the FAQs that can be found at this link.

This is a car camping event for those who like to bring everything; (the location has showers and porcelain facilities for those who won’t leave home without them); day hikes for those so inclined; lake paddling; fishing; pot luck dinners; Dutch oven cooking; DIY play time; lots of show and tell along with a little gear trading; group buys; stove tests; drawings for prizes, and some wonderful campfire fellowship.

I’ll post a planning spreadsheet soon, so until then, save the date, check out the info in the FAQs and dream about cold fronts.

We are 3 months out and 35 of the 62 sites in the main area already locked in and an early estimate of participants is 139. There's still plenty of time to read through the FAQ's - ask questions on here if not addressed there, and plan for gear lists and activities.

No worries though, there's plenty of time and space at this point.

Don't forget to read the instructions before assembling

As a reminder, please read the FAQs listed here as well as above. That will be of great help as it addresses much of what folks have asked about over the last decade that we've done this.

    A note about site reservations:

The park has three separate camping loops; Springfield, Cooks Ferry, and Post Oak. While there are trails that connect these, they are also a short drive from one another.

We have the 62 sites of Cooks Ferry blocked exclusively for our group. This area has lots of room with plenty of trees for hammocks as well as 2 restrooms, electricity and water at each site and a playground for those so inclined. It is where our Hospitality Site is located, where the Saturday night pot luck dinner is held, where classes/workshops will take place, and where we will have multiple campfire options for those who like to visit one another in the evenings.

Those can only be booked through our system noted in those FAQs. The sites in our main area have been checked for trees suitable for hanging hammocks and will be assigned in advance so when folks arrive, they will know exactly where they are going. New hangers will be in an area where plenty of veterans are willing to help with set up and welcome you.

Some prefer to reserve through TPWD and that's fine. In doing so you will not be in the same area as the main group and will be in either the water only area, Springfield or the more RV oriented area of Post Oak. You will have a guarantee of a site but direct reservations are not site specific so you will not know your actual site until you get there. For early arrivals, that's not usually an issue. For some though, it is possible to be the only hammock in an area surrounded by RVs or find that there are tents in the sites with great trees for hanging but the site you end up with is limited in hammock options.

A fair analogy is that if one is heading to the D/FW metroplex for a Rangers or Cowboys game and deciding where to stay, it is helpful to know the stadiums are in Arlington where there are plenty of accommodations. One could certainly stay in Dallas or in Fort Worth, but doing so gets you close but there's still a commute.

UncleMJM delegated finding fellow teachers to have stuff going on. The thought is to have something going on at the main campsite for the entire 4 day weekend to give newbies a place to go and feel like part of a group instead of what's happened the past couple of years where everybody kinda goes back to their own campsite. I put together just a real quick little spreadsheet for a teaching schedule for folks that might want to teach anything from turtledog stands, homemade gear, my wild foods and medicines thing, and whatever else strikes your fancy.
Now please remember, we're a bunch of crazy hammock people in the woods so times don't have to be anything near exact. And god knows I'm the worst one in the world for saying "Class will last one hour" and then two hours later we're showing up covered in mud and still talking. I'd think there's going to be some bleed over for some classes and the main campsite is big enough to handle it.

So again, HERE IS THE LINK FOR THE SPREADSHEET
    Thanks!

*EDIT 8/16* Fixed the ability to edit. Try again.

Since Oldgringo will be on walkabout until 8/27 let’s consider that a “Bank Holiday” and wait until after then to contact him for information about site payments.

Feel free to post here or PM me if you have questions that you'd like addressed sooner.
