The recommendations that people give are shooting for a 0.5% of Permethrin. This is the percentage solution that the Sawyer product for camping comes in.

Thus the math is: 10% solution = 9 parts water & 1 part permethrin
If you want a 0.5% solution, you want 1/200 or 199 parts water and 1 part permethrin
Thus 1 oz. 10% permethrin + 19 oz. water gives you 19.9 oz water +.1 oz Permethrin = 0.5% solution. Scaling this up to 1 gallon. = ~6 1/2 oz of your solution and add water to reach 1 gallon.

Finally this does not all need to be 100% exact as the US military recommendation is a .75% solution for uniforms. So anywhere between 6 1/2 to 9 oz. of your solution in a gallon of water will be fine.

Like this! Since the older I have become, the more math challenged I seem to be! This takes a lot of guessing out of the game! Thanks!

Going from 10% solution to .5% solution,

    10 % ÷ 20 = .5 %

    128 oz (1 gl) ÷ 20 = 6.4 oz

Take 1 gal of water, remove 6.4 oz of water, replace with 6.4 oz of (10%) permethrin, = .5% solution.

For 2 gal of water, remove 12.8 oz of water, replace with 12.8 oz of (10%) permethrin, = .5% solution.

I use both the spray and soak methods and try to cover everything in Permethrin except my underwear. Mostly I'm doing it to kill ticks. Remember, Permethrin is an insecticide so it's designed to kill insects. It may also act as a repellent but that's where I use Picaridin because it specifically is a repellent.

In 1 gallon, I treated 3 pairs a pants, about 10 pairs of socks, four shirts and a hammock. AND had left over solution (pour it around your foundation to kill termites).
Make sure any cats are not near any of this stuff when wet or the solution.
I mix mine in a 5 gallon bucket but I do 2 gallons because I treat a lot of stuff at a time. It uses about 1-1/4 gallons and I have 3/4 gallons left over that I put in spray bottles for new stuff and touch-ups.

Yep, all of that up there.

Any left over can be put into a spray bottle and spray inside your car and trunk. I had a tick crawl on my leg while wearing shorts once and I jumped out of my car to remove it. Now I spray the car and trunk incase a little bug slips on my skin and not my clothing/shoes/hat.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Products sold in the mass market have to be conservative do to the idiot factor. The military uses a much stronger dose than 0.5% when they treat uniforms. I usually mix up a 1% solution then wash the clothes on a gentle cycle before wearing.
