    Outside pole mod

Thinking about buying an outside pole mod for my tarp. Any issues with the pole lying directly on the ridge seam? Fast track to a leak? Thougtys/experiences?

Looks much easier than my mod but my internal pole mod with pole "pockets" gave me more room and more flexibility IMHO and I like the look.

I've seen guys do it both ways

most seem to move to hanging their tarp via a CRL, and then the pole rests on the CRL, rather than the top seam of the tarp

Well, considering that internal poles also rest right up against the tarp, I don't really see the difference. Some tarps have a grosgrain ridge that I presume helps to some extent. I use both internal and external, depending on the tarp, CRL with external (no grosgrain), and I haven't experienced any damage either way.

That said, I do lean toward internals (even a single) just as a personal preferrence.

I had a polel mod for a while but now I just pick a stick or Branch off the tree that's the right length, works just as well and I don't have to carry the polls. never had a problem with any of it rubbing on the tarp.20161201_161705.jpg this was the first time I forgot one of my poles ;<)
By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...

For a backpacker who uses trekking poles, this is the solution...

This is my experience.. I opt for a single internal pole most of the time as I find it creates a cavern of space inside and is more effective at keeping the tarp side from blowing in when gusts come up.

Pole pockets are pretty easy to make...

My DIY tarps have the grosgrain ridge cap and the few times I have tried over the ridge pole, it didn't seem there would be any issue...

I used the internal poles for my tarp, couple of extra pockets at the stake out points and 2 zing-it ridge retainers ..... built in porch mode, full support along the tarp in bad weather ... no mid tarp punctures to worry about.

Rather repeat what Kitsap posted, here is the link: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...son-Tarp/page5

    Just my $.02

When I use external Pole mods, I make sure my CRL is above the tarp so poles rest on them, rather than the tarp directly.

Only time that I have heard of anyone having a leak by using the pole mod over top is with a tarp that has the standing ridge line seam (Warbonnet superfly), as the pole over the ridge pushes the seam down, but you can eliminate this issue by running a secondary ridgeline over top of the tarp or use a single ridgeline and have the pole rest on it. I sew my tarps with a felled French seam and have never had a leak where the pole crosses the ridge.
