    Down Loft Time?

How long does it take for your underquilt/topquilt down to fully loft up?

It depends a little on the shell material. Not too long usually. My quilts that use ION take a bit longer as it’s not as breathable as other materials.

After setting up I put my UQ on and lay the TQ spread out inside the hammock. Usually this is hours before I go to sleep, but I've done it as quick as 30 minutes out of the pack and it felt fully lofted. I bet it could fluff up a bit more, but would be negligible.

I imagine it has a lot to do with how squished the down was before you put it on. Even though it's easier to put my insulation in the bottom of my pack, I think it might at least shorten the downs life by being crushed. I try to attach my quilts to the outside of my pack in a waterproof bag, using as little force as possible when attaching the bag to the pack. I rely on my down and really baby it.

No idea here, but here is some thoughts. Once I get to camp, I toss my PCT bear bag line, just so it is done before dark. Set up the tarp and hammock. Once the hammock is up, I shake the UQ and hang it and shake the TQ and toss it into the hammock. I then get busy getting water, cooking and such. So the quickest I get to the hammock might be an hour and it is all lofted up. I shake it all again when I am back to the hammock/pack getting something or doing more set up tasks.
I was reading a blog of someone halfway thru on her CDT hike of her triple crown. She posted a photo of her sleeping bag in a hotel tub with some down soap. Washing out the grime. She had decided to try it as she was doing 2 zeros while visiting family and had some great weather. She said she could really tell the loft was back. Dirty down doesn't loft up as much as clean down. But drying in the sun, did take a full day with lots of turning and shaking. Back on the trail she reported that it felt warmer.
