    My suggestion is if you are to do this solo as a 1st timer (which I would not recommend) then make sure you tail has a few bail out points if you cannot make the milage or something happens. As you gain experience and skill then further afield is no issue.

    If lacking others to follow your passion is the issue try Meetup.com there is a backpacking group near you doing weekly trips.

    I'm rather new at walking away from the car also and one thing I did was to find general topographical maps of the area you are going and learn to use them with a reliable compass.

    Learning to use them is a skill set all on it's own but not very difficult if you are motivated to do it.

    Also, when you get in the trail head area look for free gas station maps and literature. they are a real good source for local trail information.

    Start small and keep your pack light, you will be fine.

    Great tool to download maps, waypoints and tracks as GPS file into Garmin device or GPS apps like Gaia onto your smartphone.
