    Tarp to tree straps

    Hi !!!

    I want to try something...

I always hang my hammocks with polyester tree straps using a becket hitch.

If I tie a small loop of shock cord to my tarp and add a carabiner to it, is it possible to make a marlin spike hitch on the tree straps, just over the becket hitch and attach the tarp with the carabiner ?

No, that would not work as the hammock is hung below the MSH on the tag end of the strap. All your weight will try to break the toggle and untie the hitch. However the idea has merit, just use a different attach method to the strap.

I have a system that works great with a all in one setup on 1” webbing hanging both hammock & tarp on the 1” webbing .... this works best with Sheltowees hammock co straps as I find them to be more robust & not as collapsible as other 1” webbing straps .
So what I have is 4 titanium Dutch spiders , a pair for hammock & a pair for the tarp. Then all I do is slide the Dutch ti spiders up & down the 1” webbing to adjust hammock & the other pair to tension out the tarp . Once set it’s going nowhere . Hope this may help.414F4570-A4AF-41AA-9276-E3B366C270CE.jpg

Wow, I hadn't thought about using a second pair of spiders like that! Thank you for sharing!

Wondering if a prussik made of shock cord will stay in place on the strap...

I tried it and it works, the shock cord prussik can be just a little bit hard to move on the straps but its holding.

Am I understand it correctly that the ridge line of the tarp doesn't change when you get in the hammock? One of the criticisms of Hennessy's standard set up was using the same hammock suspension line for the tarp attachment. It seems a loaded hammock on the same line would either decrease the tarp ridge line so it would sag, or impart more force across the ridge line than originally intended. I suppose, if it was pulling with more force, that some bungee in the setup would protect the tarp from undue strain.

I only tried the shock cord prussik on the strap for the moment, I will have to test this on the field with a loaded hammock.

If I apply just a little force on the prussik, it can still move on both side, to prevent sag and to protect from strain.
But I have to test and see if it really works

It works great. No hassle with setting up a continuous riidgeline. I’ve been using this setup for a while without a hitch. I’ll be posting another video showing the spiders in action

I have 1" multibuckles on my straps if I want to do this. They sit on the strap somewhere between the tree and my Beetle Buckles. It's easier to position them before I tension my hammock, though.
