Tarp RL challenge

My idea is a length of Amsteel with an Whoopie Sling type adjustable loop at each end. Attaches to the tree with a small length of webbing and a toggle on each end. Simple enough. The end.

Whoopies dont work in a situation where there is no give in the line.

Try it... Place a whoopie sling between 2 fixed points and pull it tight.

Now try to loosen it.

One idea is you could put in a fixed loop in one end and then at lets say the 4ft mark (or what ever length you need to go around tree) put in a inline figure eight knot use a toggle there and then on the other end use a prussic and the fixed loop for the adjustment portion.

You could simply push the toggle out.

I was assuming the ridgeline should be tight.

I left out a bit of detail in my first post. The ridgeline would be exactly as opie's current version. First tree uses a fixed eye and a toggle. Then come the two Prusik loops for the tarp. Where the Figure-9 would normally go, there would be a Prusik with a toggle. This Prusik should be adjusted to say within a foot or two of the second tree. Then, the line is wrapped around the tree and the last Prusik loop is connected to the toggle. Now, you can pull the free end through the last Prusik to tighten, or slide the next to last Prusik toward the first tree. The advantage of this method is that the entire ridgeline is tightened, and that it will work for any tree separation without any of the Prusik's getting in the way of each other.

Anything is possible... I like your idea.....

I was thinking of having the extra line under the tarp for use... whether you pull it taught or leave it semi loose.

The issue with a full RL and using it to hang things is what youre hanging will be smack against the tarp. No air flow means no drying if your items are wet. With the slack under the tarp, you can adjust the sag so you get air flow.

More advertising for my method: For a short distance between trees, all the excess line is conveniently placed near the second tree, where it does not pose a tripping hazard. Just set it and forget it!

Webbing is not something on the approved list!!

Gotta keep the weight down and webbing will add alot of weight to a 2.2mm Zing It RL.

What's wrong with knots? Seems like a fixed knot on the prussik, and then a lark's head on the fixed loop would serve the same purpose as a toggle.

I have never used a full-length RL, and I don't really know its advantages. If the objective is to have a clothes line under the tarp, why not install a separate clothes line that has the correct sag, or even an adjustable one? Then, use two separate lines for the ridgeline with a fixed eye and a toggle, and a Prusik at the tarp tie-out (like the system we discussed via pm)?
