Dude's been planning. TAT off-road? I'd love to see your rig and eventual gear list.

This just might be the solution for my apartment balcony! However, I don't know if an extra 11-lbs is feasible for a cross country bike ride.

I agree. How can it possibly be that much?

There is a northern route through Montana and North Dakota as well, starting in Washington. I think it might end in Boston(?) Of course parts of northern Montana and North Dakota aren't famous for their trees...

You will have a few hundred miles in eastern CO and western KS that will pose a hanging problem if you don't get to certain public campgrounds by the end of the day.

That route isn't the TAT. The TAT drops further south for the eastern 2/3. TAT is on my bucket list

Dutch, you have to take a hammock! Don't you know the first rule of the Hammock Club?! What would be next - Shug showing off his newest tent?

A hammock stand is a very doable option when bicycle touring, unless you want to go as light as possible. I don't know about the Tensa, but I have successfully taken the Handy Hammock Stand on my last tour. It fitted on my bike pretty well. I'd take screw pegs, though, instead of the standard pegs. I hear that you can get away with one screw peg for three straight pegs.

11 pounds would be a lot of extra weight to tote up the steep inclines, but those vertical places tend to have more hang spots, and the flats are where you have much fewer hang options. What about having a gear stash waiting for you when you get past the Rockies with a tensa stand?

Dutch, a good book to read would be Biking Across America by Paul Stutzman, one part I remember is the marijuana farms in the west. They are very strict about trespassing, The author stayed pretty much in hotels, only camping when necessary. Not sure if you mean motor bike or cycling but something to think about. I think you will have issue in the Midwest area. Seeing trees will not be the problem, crossing property lines to hang in the tree is the problem. Definitely let us know your gear list. Good Luck

    It’s a “light” 11 lbs... you won’t even know it’s there.
