How can I enjoy camping/hammocking when the weather is rainy?

I always tell myself that if i get a lot of rain I'm gonna put on my rain gear and go practice my tropical survival skills, but I always end up snacking and taking naps!

I have a fairly large tarp for my hammock that gives me a mostly dry space to read or whittle, or work on my baking skills or something.

But I agree with others here that if there a group along it's super nice to have some sort of gathering area under a tarp or net house or whatever you can rig up.

I enjoy reading, looking at maps or trail guides, playing cards, eating together, and stuff like that.
Apple or cherry cobbler usually brightens things up for me too.
Fishing in the rain is doable if it's a light rain, or if your just bank fishing maybe rig up a small tarp?

With younger kids you can play games, treat pretend injuries. Cooking hotdogs and roasting marshmallows is usually a winner.
Sometimes my kids just figured it all out for themselves which usually required dry clothes afterwards!

I'm late to the party but have a suggestion not mentioned. My wife and I went hiking at Bowman Lake and after we got back to the car She started complaining how overheated she was and soaked in sweat.

I realized I was wearing my synthetic moisture wicking shirt, which also has UV protection. I wasn't sweating at all and really not that hot. Cotton shirt on her and I believe it held a lot of heat in, especially after getting wet with sweat.

I am now much more confident in the synthetic insulated base layer I purchased for this coming fall camping. I Will be investing in a lot more of its type clothing.

I have a DD's 4m and a 10x10 winter tarp for hammock comfort duties.

As a scoutmaster I used an old Army parachute. It may not be waterproof, but even under intense downpours it would only mist slightly. It can be rigged high, over a fire, won't melt, and can be tied to survive a hurricane!

+1 on the synthetic clothing. There is a special comfort in knowing one's wet clothing will dry on its own (in use) once the weather clears and one gets back to work. Tarps are a must. Extra clothes, too.

Love the concept of the rain skirt/quilt! I'll be DIYing one of those soon.

Persistent rain was what made me invent the Gear Box (a rain-proof gear hammock)...

I hang it first, dump my pack in it, and then I put up a tarp.

Does away with the Gear Explosion under yer hammock, too.
