Chinese knock offs are fine. Real men can sleep on the ground with nothing on them, so consider anything more as gravy. Remember, hammocks take a lot of abuse, and even the most expensive get filthy and gross. Use the cheap stuff - even if you have to replace it in a couple years, you're still saving way more money than if you wasted it on the "cottage industry" HG over-hyped stuff.

I think you forgot to use the irony tags. But just in case you're serious and consider your Dutch hammock and Hammock Gear quilts and tarp to be wasted money, you could always put up a for sale ad and let somebody else take the over-hyped gear off your hands. You should be able to buy a lot of Chinese hammock gear for the proceeds.

Nobody buys used quilts. It's like buying used underwear.

I must have missed that memo since I bought a used quilt. As did the people who I sold some of my other quilts to. As apparently did the members who are posting wanted ads or those who bought from the for sale ads. Seems like many people know how to wash a quilt and don't believe in cooties.

I think I missed that memo too. Quilts are the biggest sellers in the FS marketplace.

Both of my quilts are used.

I guess HF members are a lot closer than I previously thought...

FastHamFreddy, welcome aboard . . . from a noob in Montgomery.

Like others have said, you'll probably want some kind of underquilt.

Most of my hammock gear I made at home, so I feel comfortable recommending that you at least look at HF member leiavoia's awesome No-Sew Costco down throw UQ design, the Gemini UQ (link: http://leiavoia.net/pages/hammock/geminiquilt.html). I used it (double layered) on a recent trip to the Adirondacks in New York State, and although it did get chilly (by Montgomery standards) at night, I was toasty warm the whole time. I was also protected from mosquitoes biting me from beneath, through the ripstop. (If you're allergic to down, or if you don't care about the weight of your gear, you could (as I also did) make a passably decent UQ from an $8.00 sleeping bag from Academy Sports).

I won't weigh in on the cottage v. china controversy except to say that with my DIY gear I have no one to blame but myself for slack tolerances . . . and I know, if I decide to upgrade, what I'm upgrading from, and why.

    Good luck, and HYOH.

Not sure what I should be looking for.

I had the same thought. Look into user's other posts for insight. You're probably familiar with what they say about opinions... I'd just ignore it and move on!
