Talking Nifty STL Zing-It guy line

So I'm fiddling around with my spool of 2.2mm Zing-It yesterday, and trying to figure out how to make STLs out of them, and I think, well, everything else is spliced, why not the elastic? So I try that, and it pulls out because it shrinks as it stretches, so I think, well, why not just stitch it in? So I do, and then realize I can wind the limiter section around the shock cord to keep it neat and unsnagged. The minimum distance is kinda long, so I put a loop in the other end too for a shorter min. distance.

    So whatcha think?

    That's very clever!

Do you have a picture of it under tension?

    Sure, give me a sec.

    Okay,
Here's it slack: And here's it tensioned:

For splicing, I use DIY perma-lok needles:

I just screw the cord into the needle, and bury away. I pulled the shock cord through a short bury and back out, took it off the needle, milked the end back into the cord, and just put a few stitches in with thread from some paracord. Instead of tying the ends off, I just left about half an inch and melted them with a lighter. I'm not really pleased with the lack of taper on the shock cord, but it's mostly cosmetic.

    Hope that answers any questions,

Now THAT is pretty nifty. Could you post instructions for the connection of elastic to line? A photo or two? Please?

Clever. Do the wraps with the slack section induce any twisting in the line when it's not under tension?

Nope, I wrapped the Zing-It so it wasn't twisting as it spiraled. At full tension (something like 7 lbs, don't have a fish scale) I can see some twisting, but not enough to be a problem for anything.

    That looks nice and clean.
After looking through all the posts this winter, it looks like everyone has time on their hands to put their ideas into action. Excellent!!

How does the elastic attach to the cord? buried? I can't make it out in the picture.

You got it right. The elastic is buried in the hollow-braid guy line, then sewn in place to hold it. I don't have experience with the hollow-ended splicing fids that Acer uses, but I'm pretty sure taping the shock cord to a piece of stiff wire will work.
